I am over half way through my time here with AMREF. It has gone so quickly. Since my last entry I have flown to South Africa, Abu Dhabi, twice to Mogadishu, Tanzania and a number of flights within Kenya. We took a patient who had been shot in the head from Mogadishu to Abu Dhabi. It was a humanitarian flight funded by Abu Dhabi. In a way it is a shame that they picked this particular patient, as he is not going to do well and is very unlikely to survive even with the best medial care let alone have any rehabilitation potential. In my opinion, maybe they could have chosen a different patient who would have benefited from the mission, and they would have still got the same publicity. Shame. It was so hot in ... read more

These few weeks have truly been action packed and memorable. Being an AMREF flying doctor definitely keeps me busy and out of trouble! First let me tell you a little about AMREF. The African Medical Research Foundation was set up by 3 plastic surgeons in 1957. They had identified that there were many patients in Africa in need of plastic surgery following injuries from war, accidents etc. They started travelling around Africa, running clinics and operating. This soon snowballed. They realised that flying to the patients was quicker that travelling overland, thus the “flying” part begun. It soon became clear that in many cases the facilities required were not available in remote areas and that it was better to evacuate the patient to a more resourced hospital. Meanwhile, they had also started outreach programs including teaching ... read more

Had a little night stop in Nairobi where during the day me and couple of the girls went to visit and baby orphanage in the town. One of the girls had volunteered here couple years ago for a month. I'm so glad I went as I was worried it would be too heartbreaking but it was a lovely orphanage. They are so happy for you just to go in and help with the babies to feed them. There were lots of people there to help and the babies were just gorgeous. I was with one little baby boy for over an hour in which the whole time he just stared at me and kept giggling away. Just really puts so much into perspective.... read more

DAY 1: I left Jersey today at 7:30pm after saying goodbye to my girlfriends and my parents at the airport. I was so nervous, but so excited about starting my journey to Africa. (Picture 1) I flew British Airways to Gatwick and had an over night stay in a nearby guest house. I could not sleep a wink as I was so excited and buzzing about stepping foot in Africa! I repacked and unpacked and replaced my case, shifting things around and putting things in new pockets and when I was finally happy, I eventually nodded off to sleep. DAY 2: I set an alarm for 7am, and jumped straight out of bed. Finally I was going to Africa! I packed up my stuff again and loaded up my rucksacks and went downstairs for breakfast. I ... read more

Around 11 am breakfast had been eaten, pleasantries had been observed and Speck and Caroline were on their way into Nyeri to catch a matatu to Nairobi. On the way a stop was made at a small school where James's children attended. This stop was slightly longer than expected due to once again having gone where they ought not to. James was detained briefly and questioned by the principal and instructed not to bring visitors again without clearing it through him. The matatu ride was uneventful until it reached the outskirts of Nairobi. The driver missed the exit where he was to release Speck and Caroline so he did the traditional Kenyan thing, he stopped in the highway and let them out. After waiting 45 minutes looking for a matatu going the right route Speck and ... read more

Greetings from Nairobi. What a culture shock - totally different from Gondar. The first thing I did when I arrived yesterday was walk to a shop and buy a diet coke. Bliss! The house I am staying in is lovely, comfortable and CLEAN. There is even someone employed to do the cooking. Result! It has wifi too! Enough about Nairobi for now. This blog is my final one about Ethiopia. I left Gondar 9 days ago and have been travelling since. I first went to Harar. This is totally different to other places in Ethiopia that I have visited. It is close to Somaliland, has a big Indian and Arabic influence and is predominantly Islamic. The main thing that struck me was that so many people lie around the streets and chew chat. Even when I ... read more

Speck slept till 9 am. That is like a record. Caroline unfortunately still is fighting with the mattress. This day marks a week that Speck has been in Kenya and his wife tells him today is the day... The day he washes his underwear! Dreading this day, Speck has been stretching the life of his boxers by wearing the same pair for an average of 2 days, so he only has to wash 4 pairs. With Jacinta's help he gets soapy water and begins to wash. Janet seems to think he is doing it wrong and almost chokes on her breakfast of leftover rice and green grams she is laughing so hard. After threatening to throw his half cleaned and very wet underwear at her she finally stopped and decided the most helpful thing would be ... read more

The next morning Speck woke with less back pain than he had experienced in the last few days, unfortunately Caroline did not sleep well. Next attempted fix is a combination, firmer mattress on bottom and too soft mattress on top. Kenyan pancakes for breakfast again, Speck hung out and waited for Caroline to wake up. Eventually she was pried out of bed, just in time to take a shower and have lunch, Jacinta made liver and onions, ugali, and kale. Caroline and Speck hopped a bus to the city center and just about the time that Caroline was telling him about when she was in a wreck in a Nissan bus, the bus driver slammed the brakes so hard they thought he had hit someone. Speck was sitting in the back row center and was thrown ... read more

Another morning with a stiff back, Speck is having terrible disagreements with Janet's mattress. Attempted solution is to scrounge a different mattress that is much softer. Breakfast introduces Speck to Kenyan pancakes, which are like thick crepes, like chapati and a pancake had a baby. Around 1 Speck, Caroline and Junior catch a city bus to see Mama Jo, aka Caroline and Junior's Aunt Margaret. Also there is Karen, the 7 year old toothless scholar, and her mama and little brother Jackie and Keegan. They visit, have dinner, Speck learns that Caroline knows how to make chapati, the Kenyan tortilla that Speck really likes. After dark they catch a Nissan, a minivan/ bus that is driven with wild abandon while thumping music plays and the money collector hangs out the open door while traversing the most ... read more

Speck woke up with a severe back ache. Bus downtown, visited Lucy's office, train station, site of 1998 American embassy bomb blast, walked around government row, wondered why all the buildings looked to be built pre 1980... Because there are no new buildings. Bitter lemon at Cafe Deli, Caroline had samosas which were very good and Kenyan versions of sausages that Speck swears taste like someone fried a Vienna Sausage. There was a long line for the bus ride home but when they got on the bus Speck and Caroline sat in the front seats and got to watch the mayhem up close. Kenyans be CRAZY, Speck was sure that they would run someone over. When the bus dropped them off they stopped at Navais to buy a jug of water for the house water cooler. ... read more
