Our overseas move started in 2005, with a brief vacation in India. Then we joined the Tsunami relief team in Sri Lanka for a couple of years. Now we are in Africa, based in Kenya, with Murrays work taking him all over Africa and beyond.

It’s been a busy six months for Murray, starting a new job, travelling to new places and meeting new people. I’m now managing water supply systems and other infrastructure development for more than 2 million refugees in camps in 10 countries across East, Horn and Central Africa. My first visit was to three camps along the northern border of South Sudan, where close to 200,000 refugees have crossed the border due to fighting in the North. I was involved in planning infrastructure for two new camps, and also upgrading infrastructure in the existing camps in the face of a Hepatitis E outbreak. I then spent time at HQ in Geneva meeting the management team and learning the new internal organisation systems. While in Geneva I managed to catch up with a couple of old school friends ... read more

April has seen my Dad, Mum and brother visit from NZ, ANZAC Day, Hayley’s 4th birthday and Charlotte’s 6thbirthday. ANZAC Day is a national day of remembrance in New Zealand, it is a day we remember those who have served in war. It originally started to honour those in the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) who fought at Gallipoli during World War 1. My Dad was in the NZ Royal Airforce for 8 years, he also plays the bagpipes in the NZ Signals Band and has participated in many ANZAC Days. I didn’t realise but this particular ANZAC Day in Kenya was Dads first dawn service. It was a special occasion for us as a family, as Charlotte raised the NZ flag again, but was able to wear a miniature of Dads service medal, ... read more

Nairobi goodbyes.

Don’t you just hate goodbyes? I prefer “see-ya-laters”. Nairobi seems to be emptying out of our friends this past year, and the beginning of the year has seen 3 families dear to us leave. It is hard, it really is, saying goodbye, explaining to little ones that they won’t see “soo-and-soo” as they will now live in – pick one “Myanmar, Cambridge, Romania, Scotland, Australia, Chad, DRC, Finland, Dubai, America, etc, etc”. We have friends all over the world, and it is hard. So hard, I needed to escape from Nairobi, yet again, I headed to South Africa with a friend. South Africa doesn’t feel like the “Africa” I know, it’s so much cheaper than Kenya, the roads are smooth, the shopping is amazing, you can buy anything you want in the supermarket, clothes, house stuff, ... read more

Murray has managed a 2 week trip to Southern Sudan, complete with gun fight outside his compound, he is currently in Switzerland and then will head straight to Uganda. Insane, but that’s normally how his jobs start out, hit the ground running and all. We are being positive, but 4 weeks out of 5 weeks not in Nairobi is a challenge. I will hopefully get a blog out of him soon-ish, but I would settle for a conversation at this stage, so, no rush on that one :) Me and the kids have been in Nairobi, settling into our new house. We love the new house, nothing wrong with the old house, we loved that too, and we just needed a change, as we crossed into our 5th year in Kenya. With the change in Murrays ... read more

Christmas Day

We did our normal Christmas in Nairobi, dropping into the orphanage in the morning, and then opening presents in the afternoon. This year we even managed to be social with friends and had an amazing feast at my friend Katies house. The highlight for me this year was watching Hayley and Emma interact with the babies at the orphanage. Normally Hayley and Emma are both jealous of anyone I hold, and stick very close to mum. This year Hayley was getting toys for the babies and making sure if they cried that they were ok. Emma even ventured off my lap to play with some of the totos. As we left the orphanage to feast, and open presents, we were told one of the babies had passed away early in the morning at the hospital. What ... read more

For a year Murray has been saying "us in our 30s". Today that ended as he turned the big 4-0. We celebrated with a small BBQ at our place in Nairobi with a few friends. Christmas video. Thats so last year, I know, but here are our kids acting out the nativity with the help of our nieces (audio). The bloppers on the end are a must watch. Enjoy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d3OFOSbSV7w Have a safe and Happy Christmas and all the best for the New Year. Miriam, Murray, Charlotte, Hayley and Emma.... read more

Murray’s project with our organisation of the last 5 years has come to an end. It’s an end of an era really, and November has seen Murray say goodbye to the Nairobi and London offices. In our last days in Nairobi, I (Miriam) went to Switzerland for a training and a job interview. I really enjoyed the training, and enjoyed finding out who I was without being Mrs Murray or Mama Charlotte. Switzerland was beautiful in Autumn, and we even had snow on the first day. My French is worse than I thought, and often I didn’t risk it, as in the past Singhala or mixed English/Swahili is more likely to come out. I met some great people, and also have a strange bond with those who I experienced the training with. It was INTENSE was ... read more

7 years ago as newlyweds we left NZ for India, then went on to Sri Lanka to help with reconstruction after the Tsunami. Many rice and curry meals later, we moved to the land of ugali (kenyan mashed potato), where we have been working on a global water supply and sanitation project, which finishes at the end of this year. We are now a family of 5, with 3 beautiful girls who view Kenya as home. Charlotte is enjoying school, a keen ballet dancer/princess and reader. Hayley is our fashion queen with spunk to boot, and Emma is a singing, dancing, chatterbox who is comfortable speaking in English and Swahili. We are not sure what adventures lie ahead, but it looks like we may not be done with Africa just yet (sorry New Zealand!). This past ... read more

New Zealand, Aotearoa, Land of the Long white cloud. I have to say, I shed a little tear as we started our decent to Auckland International airport, on a long white cloud. I love New Zealand, and as one of my very wise Kenyan friends said, "There is no place like home, wherever home is". We had a lovely holiday, spending some time at Mount Ruapehu before Mount Tongariro erupted. This was the kids first real snow experience. Charlotte went to snow planet in Auckland and Hayley went to snow planet in Dubai. The kids really enjoyed it, making snow people, making snow angels and tobogganing. Charlotte tried skiing, but preferred the toboggan. At one point, Charlotte was just lying in the snow, looking up at the clouds, completely at home. Murray & I did a ... read more

I have decided that getting anything from Murray for the blog is as painful as having teeth pulled. But I will persevere as I think it’s a great record of our time overseas. So please encourage Murray when he does give me a . . . . paragraph, ya! (Miriam) “It was great to be back in Myanmar after 2 years. The change in the new political environment was seen everywhere, I could now get a visa on arrival, there are new cars on the road, but the sad thing was the division between rich and poor seems to be growing. This time I had a chance to visit projects in Northern Shan state, which has seen active conflict in recent years. It was exciting to see the work in the villages where we are operating, ... read more
