Hello everyone! Well it has only been five days since our last entry but we have crammed so much into that time that we are not quite sure where to start! Apologies in advance for the excessive length. Those reading at work may need to do it in stages! This entry is being written from the Nefertiti Hotel roof terrace in central east bank Luxor. Our hotel is two streets back from the Nile and we have views over to the West Bank of the Nile (to the Valley of the kings and queens) and more immediately to the avenue of sphinxes leading up to the magnificent Luxor Temple which is directly over the road. After our last entry we left you as we were about to board the "Sleeping Train" from Cairo to Aswan. I ... read more

March 21, 22, 23, 2008 Aswan / Luxor, Egypt We arrived early Friday morning ( Good Friday - Not celebrated here in Egypt ) in Aswan from Cairo and went immediately to our ship, Ramadis I, that will take us to down the Nile River to Luxor via Edfu. This morning we took a small boat up the Nile River from Aswan to visit a local Nubian village and see the sights along the Nile near the old Aswan Dam Site. This was an interesting way to spent a few hours before checking into our room on the Ramadis I. The Nubian people of this part of Egypt were probably the most affected by the dams that were built as they lived on the river and had to be moved when the lakes were formed behind ... read more

After a full day of seeing the sights in Cairo, our train took us down to the start of the Nile Cruise. We rode all the way down to Aswan, Upper Egypt. Some people may not be aware, but Upper Egypt is south of Lower Egypt. This is because the Nile flows from south to north, thus, making the upper part further south. All along the Nile though, Egypt is lush, full of life and similar to a tropical oasis. It was always quite strange though, because you can see the desert just beyond the Nile. Besides this, you get to visit many temples along the way of the Nile. I went ahead and combined a couple of days travels on this blog, since we saw temples for the next couple of days. One important aspect ... read more

Finding the train station to get to Aswan was a bit of a hassle. We received directions from the owner of the hostel, but didn't quite realize we had to take a train 2 stops to get there. Marsha and I wandered around the train station area for about an hour, to no avail. I was getting quite frustrated, as the overnight sleeper trains we were planning to take usually filled up quickly. It was hot and sticky, people everywhere. Finally, I made the decision to take a cab, regardless of the distance. It turned out to be a smart move, since the drive there took well over 20 min. We finally arrived at the ticket booth and found out that in fact, the sleeper trains to Aswana and Luxor were fully booked. Our other ... read more

Leaving Luxor and heading off south to Aswan on Mar. 7th started out very well. We had our complimentary breakfast at our cheapie hotel, then sped out the door on the way to the train station. Five minutes later we were there, snacks in hand, all ready for a quick three hour train ride to Aswan. Things were going too smoothly to be true, and sure enough, nine am, our departure time, rolled around, and kept on rolling by. Minutes turned into hours and before we knew it, it was noon and still no sign of our train! A fellow traveller came over to ask if we knew why the delay, since we seemed so unconcerned. We explained that our train had been late from Cairo as well, so sooner or later we imagined that it ... read more

We were dreding the felluca trip, just because the weather had been soo cold in Cairo and we were freaking out that we may get the runs during the 3 day sail (no toilets) extravaganza. We set sail in Aswana for Kom Ombo and Edfu. We were on the nile dancer and our 3 tours guides were very much into the dubies. The first day was great and Amanda and i did our own private trip to Elephantine Island and the Botanical gardens in Aswan. Once we got back we set sail for Kom Ombo. Due to the wind we didn't make it to Kom Ombo so we pulled over with 5 other fellucas. ... read more

Philae temple is another beautiful temple, built similarly to Edfu. This one is dedicated to Isis. It hasa beautiful setting, but it is still too crowded. From Aswan, you take a ferry across the Nile to the island where the temple has been moved. It's previous island is underwater now, but the spot is still visible from its new location. It looks so natural in its new location that it's hard to imagine that it was moved so recently! I really got annoyed with the giant Japanese tour group that showed up. My group of 15 waited patiently to enter the small inner sanctum so that we could learn about it. After another group left, we filed in. A Japanese tour group started to push and bang past us - one little old lady actually knocked ... read more

Sailing up the Nile was very relaxing and it gave me a chance to chill out and spend some time going through photos and writing the blog in between temple visits. Also, the further south we got the higher the temperature became and we were able to start spending more time out on deck watching the world go by. Drifting upriver, we passed through small towns and cities that were always preceded and followed by several kilometres of industrial buildings - factories, brickworks etc. But, as soon as these had passed by the landscape gave way again to farmlands and small villages where people lived beside the Nile in a manner very similar to those that lived here thousands of years ago when the Pharaohs ruled. Not too long after leaving Luxor, we passed through the ... read more

Bref, ça a fait ... read more
