The last few days have been a blur of activity. The second day at Bigfoot, volcano boarding was in order. Five of us from, the U.S., England and Israel took the crazy oath to battle El Cerro Negro. There was an hour climb up the steep volcano before the one minute descent down. I was pretty tired from my first night's festivities, but woke up around 7am. Feeling guilty from the alcohol consumption, I inquired about the location of a gym and found one. I walked over, worked out in a dungeon-like room with curious locals, and returned to the hostel for a quick breakfast and our volcano boarding adventure. I still hadn't showered since leaving the US. It didn't make much sense to prior to boarding, so I decided to wait. We loaded up onto ... read more

As usual, I waited until the last second to pack. From 11pm until about 2am, I gathered all my belongings in a pile and decided what went and what stayed. It was akin to elementary school, the captains picking their respective teams, only to disdainfullyrounds out the last of their teams. Pathetic I know. Thor's Hammer didn't make the cut, as for once in my life, a rational head prevailed. I awoke at 5am, made my obligatory cup of coffee, showered, and prepared for my top to the airport. As with all trips, I tend to get a case of the jitters. Nothing major mind you. Just a pre excitement, excitement. I conversed with the cab driver who was from Sierra Leonne. I wasn't exactly used to lively convos at 545am, but we had a nice ... read more

Sri Lankans are a beautiful people. They assist each other without expectation. I saw it in Ratnapura, when the different gem traders all crowded themselves into one office. It didn't matter who sold me the jewel, just that someone did. I saw it on the bus rides when strangers would take the child of parents on a very crowded bus and let them squeeze next to them on a seat or on their laps. I saw it when strangers would help the old carry bags and boxes on and off buses or into cars. It was infectious. They also smile from deep within, way down in the soul, radiating out. I saw it in their sparkling eyes and wide lipped grins every time they spied a shirtless, tattooed, sarong wrapped Korean American walking down the busy ... read more

As many mornings went spent with David and the Frenchies, we began in usual fashion- coffee and beach. This particular morning, I felt particularly energetic. It was before 7 am when I went on the beach to practice Muay Thai. I was the first one awake. Doing anything on the beach makes almost any experience better. Muay Thai was no exception. I moved as the waves approached and retracted. There was a meditative quality to the thunderous crashing of the water upon the shore. I felt a part of everything, of life, of nature. I remembered that I had my very large camera and heavy tripod. I had to get some more use out of them. I set them up on the beach and began filming myself doing what Master Danny had been teaching me to ... read more

A rooster crowing is a powerful alarm. It definitely works. As it crowed, my eyes fluttered open. As usual, laying in bed was not an option. I would be unable to return to a deep slumber. Besides, we all had plans together, an early start on our last full day/night in Tangelle. Audrey, David and I headed for a swim down the beach. Marion stayed behind. The waves in front of our guest house were too powerful to frolic in. Audrey's small frame wouldn't allow it. Even David and I had been tossed around violently by the waves the afternoon prior. I also wanted to visit a temple to pray, something that I had not been able to do in a few days, since the boys three day party fest in Hikkaduwa. it was time to ... read more

We awoke the next morning at about 10am. We packed, grabbed a pot of coffee as we usually did, and headed off with the help of the employees of the hotel. They had been exceptionally helpful, friendly, and vibrant. I suspected that I had come off the same way. I made sure to ask their names and chat with them, play ping pong, and share stories while I was there the entire three days. It was something that was ingrained in me for years, but a way of life I had lost in the past few. I only blame myself for being so introverted for so long, unusually un-Aric like. But I had recently found the light that used to burn a bit hotter. I truly believe that my life is supposed to be in service ... read more

4/26 The next two days weren't very eventful in the cultural sense. The girls never showed up to lunch, but we did run into Dominique while traversing the main road. It turned out that Kerry was sick all morning. Apparently, something she ate or drank didn't agree with her. So we invited Dominique to come and hang with us as Kerry recovered. We walked up and down the main road then back to our hotel for a walk up and down the beach. We settled at an outdoor beach Nara few hundred yards form our own hotel and had lunch. Kerry eventually joined us. We ate and had a few beers before starting the party at our hotel bar. We saw some of the same people. I got into a long conversation with a Swiss chap ... read more

4/25 The day was going to be spent traveling to Ratnapura, the gem mining capital of Sri Lanka. One of the main reasons for coming here was to buy a gem for a potential engagement ring. Since there was no woman in my life anymore, one would assume to nix the idea. I didn't want to. I know I would someday get married to the right woman for me, so it only seemed natural to purchase a gem anyway. At the very least, it would make a great story. Plus, I had arranged with Sarath (the owner of the guest house we were staying at in Kandy) to see his gem mine. We were going to be allowed to descend into the mine and see the mining process in action. I had watched the host of ... read more

The ladies left prior to our waking. Today was the day I had been preparing for, one of the main reasons I came to Sri Lanka, besides a spiritual retreat. Today was elephant fun day! I had my eyes set on the Millenium Elephant Foundation, a non profit housing elephants for educational and recreational purposes. A bigger sanctuary/national park was available, but I had read that it was less hands on. We walked toward downtown and met a tuk tuk driver on the way. We negotiated and hired him for the day for about 10 dollars. He was veryfriendly, as are most Sri Lankans. Our first stop was the FounDation. For 30 dollars, we were able to bathe, get showered by, and ride an elephant. Of course, we had to share the same elephant, which was ... read more

4/21 It has been a few days since I have been able to write. They have been filled with much adventure and good times. I haven't had a chance to sit down alone and meditate on my thoughts. After waking the next morning post casino romp, David and I had breakfast at the hostel and packed our things. I was going to attempt to purchase a train ticket to Kandy, something they had done a day earlier. I had hoped there was one left for me. We met Mariom in the lobby. She was accompanied by her friend from France, Audrey, a pretty brunette with a stern look. She had been on a flight from France to Doha to Colombo. Much like my own experiences with lack of sleep prior to my arrival, she had a ... read more
