First I have to say how grateful I am to Ginnie for staying with the dogs yesterday during the eclipse so I could go on the adventure with my family. It was an 8 hour journey and would have been too long for the dogs to stay alone in the camper. The eclipse was supposed to be visible from Lincoln but the clouds moved in just at the wrong time.
The dogs walk this morning took us to the dog park where the boys rompted and played. A beagle came in and immediatly Watson went to greet him. When the beagle proceeded to chase Watson he ran to his new brothers for protection. That is all Alfy needed and the chase was on. Linus watched and jumped around a little but was happy to just stay out of the fray. Then an 8 month old German Shepard joined in and the party got a little rough. It was great fun for all and by the time we had to leave, they were ready.
We packed up the camper and left Lincoln by 9:20 to head north and west. We drove on 80 W for
a few exits then north on 15 which is a 2 lane 60 mph road through farm lands. We both enjoyed seeing this part of Nebraska, the rolling land, rich with corn and soybeans. As we got further north there were more cattle grazing and fields of hay and alfalfa. The barns are still the rounded topped type that just fancinate me. Pictures
Our lunch stop was a lovely spot next to a field of sunny flowers with a lake behind. I loved the view from the camper window, picture, and the wonderful fresh air and temps in the 70s.
We continued north and eventually crossed the Missouri River and drove into South Dakota. The bridge had beautiful stone pillars as supports for the road lights, very unique. picture
Eventually we turned left onto RT 90 west, a 4 lane interstate, not having much traffic at all. We exited at the town of Mitchel and found our campground just off the interstate. We were led to a beautifully shaded campsite, parked, plugged in the electric, walked the dogs and got our chairs out for a rest under the trees. There was a delightful breeze and except for
the flies it was a perfect spot.
We had leftovers for dinner then Ginnie had a ceremony to put 4 new state stickers on her map. It is starting to really fill out now. We both showered and turned in for the night.
The dogs seem to have adjusted to life on the road pretty well. They get really excited whenever we stop even if it's a traffic light, not many out here. After the first potty break they really settle down and are good for at least 2 hours. Watson wants to sit on my lap anytime I'm not driving, thank goodness Linus and Alfy aren't lap dogs. They seem to enjoy the new smells and surroundings at each stop, there are also lots of new friends to meet and greet. 0
