blog 08-22-17 Mitchel, SD First I have to say how grateful I am to Ginnie for staying with the dogs yesterday during the eclipse so I could go on the adventure with my family. It was an 8 hour journey and would have been too long for the dogs to stay alone in the camper. The eclipse was supposed to be visible from Lincoln but the clouds moved in just at the wrong time. The dogs walk this morning took us to the dog park where the boys rompted and played. A beagle came in and immediatly Watson went to greet him. When the beagle proceeded to chase Watson he ran to his new brothers for protection. That is all Alfy needed and the chase was on. Linus watched and jumped around a little but was ... read more

We woke up Mon morning to see what a find the hotel was! Not only was it cheap with an even cheaper military rate, but they had free great breakfast, nice indoor pool with 2 hot tubs and a kiddie pool, indoor mini golf, and even a realistic statue of Rushmore (minus the bandaid on Jefferson's face). And thanks to a Plugshare tip we found the sweet touchless carwash that put a nice dent in the carpet of bugs on the front of the car (so many that the sensors were occasionally having issues). With a full charge we were ready to go. But wait! Mitchell, SD is the home of the world's only corn palace! We couldn't miss that, so we headed into town. While I was picturing a building that could've been built by ... read more

Day 13 We had a nice breakfast (always nice when it's free, well...), ok, we hit the road by 9 and had a nice drive through the Crow Indian Reservation and past the Big Horn Mountains and on to the Badlands. If I didn't say it before, the Badlands are "killer bad"! It's definitely worth the extra hour it takes to cruise through, it's pretty much right off the highway. The side trip kind of set us back, but..., were on vacation! We ended up stopping in Mitchell, South Dakota ( home of the world famous corn palace!). Didn't stop in and tour the corn palace but we did have a nice dinner at a ruby Tuesday's. We are hoping to make it to our humble abode in Waynesville, Ohio tomorrow, but we may find an ... read more

Geo: 43.7094, -98.0294Yay for me. The one place I have been waiting to visit and look for rocks. (Cause anything else is illegal, so all I was hoping to find were rocks ;))We travelled on a dirt road for many miles out intro some rock beds known for producing beautiful agates and many fossils. Unfortunately, a nasty storm was brewing and we had to cut it short. But we didn't leave without a large chunk of dinosaur bone and some cool rocks. Another visit is a must. After we left we went into the Badlands National Park. I imagine it being like a miniature Grand Canyon. Beautiful layers of history. It was awe inspiring. Of course we climbed and explored. From there we headed further East and stayed at a camp at Mitchell lake in the town of ... read more

Geo: 43.7094, -98.0294Oh my gosh. What to say about today. I am speechless. When I got up this morning, the first thing I did was look out the window. Back in 1966, the last time I visited Mt. Rushmore, I never got to see it because it was shrouded in a thick fog. What a disappointment. So, this was my second chance and I was nervous about the weather, especially considering how the skies had been acting since we have been up here. When I looked outside my heart sank. It was overcast with a low ceiling and it was raining. And I thought, darn, not again. Not again!!!!!We left the hotel at 8 AM, 64 degrees and headed for the mountain, hoping for a miracle. It continued to rain even though the sky seemed to ... read more

On our way to Corn Palace, and about an hour after leaving the Deadwood area, we suddenly realized we were passing a “Dances with Wolves” film set – a fort on the side of the road. I can’t remember which one, and I’m not willing to watch the movie again, to find out. Maybe you’ll recognize it from the picture… (I didn’t love the movie – sorry! I am sorry for those of you who may have. If you really want to know why, I can tell you.) Anyway – we didn’t go look at the film set. I’m not a fan. Besides, I was really anxious to get to The Corn Palace, in Mitchell SD! I mean – how can that not be intriguing!? It is, after all, the World’s One and Only Corn Palace… ... read more

Day 12 - Wednesday, August 29th, 2012 After checking out of the motel, we left Keystone and headed to the Badlands. We spent about 2 hours in the Badlands just stopping, looking and taking pictures. It was so hot we didn't venture to far from the car. The temperature was 113. Before we left the Badlands, we stopped at the visitor center and watched a film. Once we left the Badlands we headed on down the road toward Mitchell. We stopped for lunch in Murdo at a local cafe. When we were walking in the door, I saw a quarter lying on the floor. I bent over and tried to pick it up and it was stuck. Mama kicked it and it would not move. We walked in and 2 older men and a young boy ... read more

That is what today boiled down to. We both passed the mile stone of 5000 miles within the last 12 days. Whether we made it to AK or not, that is still a good mark of endurance. I also passed 15000 miles on the bike since September. That is what the 3 hour delay in the Sturgis area was for; I needed to get a service done on the bike. Great dealership and people. The service manager gave us his personal vehicle to go get lunch while thye worked on the bike. You won’t see that too often. Prior to that though, we left Gillette WY this morning and headed to Devils Tower. First day we hadn't need cold wx gear at the start. From there, down to Deadwood, Sturgis, and then Black Hills HD. Geo: 43.7094, -98.0294We got into Mitchell, SD about 4:30 p.m. We drove around town and stopped at the Corn Palace. We took pictures of the corn decorated building, and then visited the gift shop and museum inside. The mascot was just about to leave when I was able to get a picture of it next to Naomi. Naomi and I picked up a few trinkets and postcards. After asking the teller about a good restaurant to eat at, we headed to the hotel. We stayed at the Best Western Motor Inn. It was an old hotel from the 60's and 70's that had been renovated. It was small but we just needed the beds. After taking in the luggage, we cleaned up a little bit and headed to find the recommended restaurant, The Depot. The restaurant ... read more
