Today was a day of multiple modes of transportation. It's great to be cycling but it was nice to break with the routine for the day. A deciding factor for us today was that the temperature was going to hit 97 degrees. A good day for an off the bike day. We biked to breakfast in the heart of Melk. It was so relaxing in an outdoor cafe and we weren't in a rush to get on the road. Why is that? We are taking a boat ride down the Danube to the city of Krems. When else will the opportunity present itself for us to have this experience so we took advantage of it. We really enjoyed the ride. We passed so many small villages and some old castles and fortresses which the history and information was given over a speaker system. We passed apricot orchards and many vineyards of grapes. Apricots are popular here for many things such as jams, spreads, fillings in cakes, syrups for ice cream and liqueurs which are used for drinking but also to pour over ice cream. Wine from the valleys of this region are very popular also. There certainly were a large number
of vineyards visible from the boat. The vines are benched into the hillside all way to the top of the hill.
The last stop of the cruise line was in the city of Krems which was not our final destination. When we got off the boat in mid afternoon and we decided it was too late and too hot to bike. We searched for the train station and caught a fifty minute train ride into the city of Tulln. It was challenging in both train stations. In Krems we had to walk our bikes down a set of stairs and again in Tulln we had to carry them down two flights of stairs. That's not easy to do when they are loaded with gear. We managed together doing one bike at a time. After leaving the train station platform and getting on a local street in Tulln we navigated to our B&B Hotel using Maps Me.com. We never saw an information center so the Maps Me.com was very useful especially since we didn't have a city map.
In the late afternoon/evening we found ourselves in the heart of Tulln. We visited the Hauptplatz, the main square, which is
surrounded by the District Commisioner's Office and is lined with shops and outdoor cafes. In the middle of it is a Baroque Trinity Column and at the two ends you will find water fountains. Before heading to the plate we made a stop at St. Stephen's Parish Church where a Mass was just beginning so we stayed to participate in the Mass. By now it must be time for dinner. We chose an outdoor cafe bar for dinner which was quite tasty. We had the grilled pork with potato wedges and mixed vegetables along with coke and beer. Those beverages really hit the spot when it's so warm outside but the coke could use some ice! Most of the shops were closed when dinner was over but we wandered around checking out the stores. We did take note that at home jewelry stores empty the display windows before closing. That doesn't happen here. All the diamonds and watches are on display for all to see. Before heading back to the hotel it was time for one more snack. A gelato sure was a good night time snack!
Tomorrow we begin the last leg of our cycling tour along the
Danube to Vienna.
