Today we set off on our first road trip in this area of France. We enjoyed a lovely drive through the Chevreuse Valley woodland parks. As we neared the town of Chevreuse we could see the medieval Chateau de Madeleine that overlooks the town. We enjoyed a pleasant walk through the town before heading up to the castle. The castle received its name from the chapel within the castle walls that is dedicated to Sainte Marie-Madeleine. The castle was built between 1020 and 1090 to protect the town. In 1356, the castle was owned by the lord of Chevreuse who was taken prisoner by England during the Hundred Years War and had to sell his domain to pay his ransom. Parts of the castle are still in good shape and it was nice to see.
We enjoyed a lovely picnic in a park in Chevreuse before heading off to Rambouillet. Rambouillet lies on the edge of the vast Forest of Rambouillet, and is famous for its historical castle, the Chateau de Rambouillet. The chateau has hosted several international summits. We stopped in the townsite and enjoyed a coffee at a sidewalk cafe. Then we walked through the lovely park area of the chateau. Unfortunately, the chateau was being renovated and we were unable to go inside.
In the evening we went back to Marly-le-Roi to enjoy another of their restaurants, but France being France they were all closed! So, we headed off to the next biggest city, Saint Germain en Laye. After a bit of wandering the city we found a creperie that was open. Once we were full we headed off to see the Chateau de Saint Germain en Laye in the evening light.
