Flowers, Fun & Friendship

As you will have gathered, my non flower arranging friends, this has been a holiday with a difference!
The purpose of the trip was to enjoy a wonderful flower show which takes place every three years. Flower arrangers from around the world gather for this event and this year the small island of Barbados was the host. So since my last posting I have been busy at the show, firstly getting up early on Wednesday morning to take part in one of the classes of the competition. A class where all the materials are provided, that was fun 3 hours to arrange a design alongside 19 other exhibitors from around the world. The other classes had 5 hours to create their designs and from the exhibits I saw later I just marvelled at the talent in such short time for example compared to 8 hours at Chelsea. Arrived back at the hotel around midday to find David who had been relaxing by the pool, suddenly the wind swept across & the rain came down! well I have never seen horizontal rain before, it was quite scary as sunbeds and parasols were blown into the pool. Thankfully nobody was hurt but the rain continued to fall for a good 30 minutes.. Also thankfully we have had no further tropical storms during our time here. Thursday morning and back to the show with David, I wasn't lucky enough to gain an award but for me just being part of the whole experience is an award in itself. There was a great atmosphere around at the convention centre meeting people; some familiar faces from UK and new friends from around the world. I was busy with my camera trying to capture the essence of the show. The exhibits were of such a high standard and so much detail. Having shared the photos on Facebook to several flower arranging groups I now seem to have a whole bunch of 'New Facebook friends!' Friday back to the show, more photos, more new friends, more beautiful flowers to marvel at. We are with a lovely group and very friendly, one of the days I went into Bridgetown for a wander around the shops, not something I usually do on holiday but it was nice and we enjoyed a refreshing drink overlooking the watersedge and we saw a turtle in the harbour but I wasn't quick enough with the camera.

Although for me it has all been about the flowers, David has enjoyed his time too relaxing and chatting to other flower arrangers. Sunday I had a break from the show and had a wander along the beach close to our hotel, it was Sunday afternoon and Barbados families were out enjoying their weekend with picnics, swimming and generally enjoying the sunshine. Everyone is so friendly and always gave a smile as they wished you a good day. We leave on Monday for home, it's been a great trip, not our usual holiday but still great fun and of course for some relaxing as well. So many memories of 10 wonderful days on the beautiful island of Barbados.
