After a later start (although the cleaner banging on the door at 7am had other plans) we headed into the sights of Barcelona. It was a glorious day with not a cloud in the sky and it was warm enough for no jackets and just hoodies. First things first we needed some breakfast of sorts, so we hunted for a cake shop. We found a lovely one and had coffee and cake for breakfast.
Next we headed to the Arenas of Barcelona. This was a former bullring turned into a shopping centre and you could take a lift up the side to a 360 degree view over the city - well the surrounding areas but was still pretty. We then wondered down and meandered through the shops.
Out of here we walked to the Magic Fountain. We stopped and had a drink and watched the fountain. This was unfortunately unmagical as there was no big fountain display as apparently in summer the fountain does a dance along with music to lights - but we didn't see any of this! We then headed up some handy escalators (which in hindsight we wished we'd found yesterday to avoid the hike) to the National
Art museum. This was a beautiful building and the views back down to the square were spectacular. The museum was closed so we didn't gain the knowledge it held inside.
We then walked onto the Grec Theatre, this was a Ancient Greek inspired ampitheater built into the hill. This was pretty cool and such a peaceful place. We then strolled onto the Las Ramblas and located an ice cream stall and purchased a couple of scoops each. These were very tasty!
After this treat we went to hunt for the Cathedral which we found with ease (but then again it was quite large). This was a beautiful building. After this we went onto discover the Arc del Triomf but don't worry this was still Barcelona and not Paris. This was a beautiful arch which looked onto the Pg.de Lluis Companys which was a park full of differing activities from picnics, to performers and some skaters doing tricks.
The next point of call was the Parc de la Ciutadella, this was very popular and was a hive of activity. But we didn't have time to sit and join in all of this as we had things to explore. First sight within
this park was a beautiful water fountain called Cascada Monumental, which was breathtakingly beautiful. Then it was onto the more oddly random statue of a giant Mammoth. After this we then stopped to admire the Parlament de Catalunya building.
There was a zoo nearby but Simon said this was strictly forbidden, so we set off to get around this large zoo and over the train tracks. We arrived at the Port Olimpic de Barcelona, this was next door to the beach and it was glorious. It was still a lovely sunny day (although by now the sun was setting) and the beach was still populate with people enjoying the weather. We did admire this random sculpture of a golden fish (no words can describe this- just wait for the pictures!).
As the sun was setting we walked along a short pier and took a seat to watch the sun set over the Barcelona shore.
After this we walked through the streets to Port Vell once again admiring these super yachts that were docked up. We strolled round to go into the Maremagnum which was shopping complex and was apparently housing restaurants. However, this was a massive disappointment and it housed very little. So we compromised and had a Starbucks hot chocolate.
The hunt then began for some dinner so we strolled up a street near the hotel and located a restaurant. Simon had a very local Paella, whereas Nicky stayed with some pork in mustard sauce. Both tasty and what we both needed after the exertions of the day. Then it was to a nearby Irish bar near our hotel for a nightcap of cocktail and beer and of course football, before we retired to bed to rest.
