a - Embarking on the Singapore Flier
The staff here literally wished me a 'good flight' as I follows directions and 'embarked' onto the flier. As though I wasn't going to be in this exact spot 30 minutes from now, is there a teleported up there? Geo: 1.28941, 103.85
*sigh* *sad* It's not totally dead, just got a broken leg and can't walk. Something is wrong with the software or a chip or something, maybe the oppressive humidity of SE Asia finally got to it and it quit on me. It'll take pictures but not reliably, and only after a lot of coaxing so usually after the shot is already gone by. Also, I can't change through the different mode settings so I can't adjust for the environment.
I used it, as it was, for the day and by this evening it was pretty obvious I was going to have to get a new one.
So sad, I loved this camera, but I used it all day everyday for the past couple months and I guess a little wear and tear was inevitable. It died as I was walking across town words Singapore's version of the London Eye; a 40 story ferris wheel that revolves large bubble-like glass-walled rooms around, each holding a dozen or so people. I took photos on the trip around, but not too many as it was really difficult and frustrating.
Luckily I'm in Singapore, the country for all things shopping! I asked the
b - Skyline and a football field
This is among the coolest spots I've seen for a footie field. There aren't any sidelines! How many times do they need to stop play because of a 'water ball'? guy at the front desk of my hostel and he pointed me to an entire mall nearby that only sells electronics. It was a smorgasbord of digital cameras, camcorders, iPods, iPhones, DVD players - all little shops smashed next to one another. All the men who work in them competing fiercely with their identical inventories. They all told me stories about the other ones. It was a trip. I spent nearly two hours there going back and forth between all the stores negotiating.
Thank god I spent a little time on Amazon before I went to the mall and picked out one or two cameras that I liked and wrote down the features and Amazon's price. I've not valued a little piece of paper that much since I got my Indian visa at the Embassy - it was my life raft against all the hard-selling sales guys.
I ended up with the Olympus 1030, not quite the professional camera that I am laying to rest, but I think this one has got the necessary durability that this extended holiday requires. Its shockproof, crushproof and most importantly waterproof. And I can take it with me when I SCUBA, only to 10m -
so just shallow dives, but still I don't have to worry about the humidity anymore - or it getting banged around in my backpack. I got an extra Li-Ion battery so I can always have an extra charged one in my bag, and it uses the same xD memory cards as my old camera so I can still use them and the external hard drive for storage. A good camera for me for now I think. And it's really small, so easier to carry, though I have to get used to such a little thing. Since I had the Amazon price written down, thats what I paid for it. Plus a slew of Singaporean taxes, but whatever. I needed one, so thats that. So buying a camera and changing hotels (Alex had to leave for Boston a day early, so my days of mooching a free-hotel room off a friend are gone) and I've finally checked into a real hostel. This whole trip was supposed to be hostels, but who'd of guessed you can stay at resorts for hostel prices in Indonesia. Have you guys started planning your trip there yet!? You should! And lemme know
when you are going, because I'll come with you!

Ohhh... Sorry to hear about your camera; you worked it pretty hard. I am beginning to understand the wearing out process more than I would like to! Glad you went out to by another; you would not have been happy with the results of a th
row away camera. And we would all have missed your very professional shots. Did not like the looks of that ridae, but then, remember how I embarassed you screaming on the kiddie roller coaster because you did not want to go alone? Enough of that memory, thank you! Be safe. I love you. Mom
