Guatemala

Sorry for the long wait on the blog but we've been running out of steam a little bit and we just wanted to spend the last couple of weeks we had left on this trip doing stuff and seeing things rather than sitting in front of a computer!

We crossed the border into Guatemala from Belize fairly smoothly. We had heard that we would have to pay to cross the border but Alex, feeling a little argumentative decided to ask for an official receipt for the payment and the charge miraculously disappeared! The trick is though, to take your money out as if you are going to pay, wait until you get your passport back in your hand and then ask for the receipt otherwise you may not see your passport for a while!

We then headed to Tikal to see some more Mayan ruins. Tikal was good except for the weather - it proceeded to piss down for our whole time there and we ended up like two drowned rats.

After Tikal we headed to Flores for an overnight stop before heading to Antigua for a few days and then on to explore the rest of the country. We ended up staying in Antigua for 7 days as it was very beautiful. Everyone was extremely friendly and it was really chilled out. We managed to catch a jazz show by one of the original Buena Vista Social Club members there as well which made our stay there even more memeorable. Antigua is known as Disneyland by Guatemalans because it is not a true reflection on the rest of the country. After Antigua we headed to Lake Atitlan for another round of just chilling out - as it is coming to the end of the trip so we are feeling the need to get all the R&R in we can get.

Loved Guatemala, met some great people and had a wonderful time.
