After a rather uncomfortable night of sleep where I probably got no more than 4 hours of total sleep time, Kevin and I awoke and made our way over to a nearby rock to catch the sunrise. To our surprise, Sophie was already there with the same idea and the 3 of us enjoyed the peaceful calm of a desert sunrise. Today, we were to set out for a long day hike out into the Wadi Rum desert. We set out just after breakfast and already the morning had become quite warm. Heading out into the desert, it was pretty clear who would be leading the pack. Kevin, Ronan, Patrick, and myself lead the way while everyone else seemed to linger towards the back of the pack. This was one of the highlights for me during the entire trip, just hiking at a good pace with the relative silence of the desert while getting to know some of my fellow tourmates. I found out that our guide Faisal, had recently been battling the flu and it was clear that he was struggling to keep up with us in this heat. At our first rest stop, we were met by the Sheikh,
who runs our desert camp. During this hike, he would be following us and meeting up with us at various rest stops to ensure that we were all okay. From here we continued hiking over to some nearby rock outcroppings where we took some group photos over a rock arch and hiked to the top of some rock formations for some amazing views of the surrounding desert. After climbing back down, we were again met by the Sheikh who had layed down a large blanket in the shade so that we could all have a break. We rested for about 30 minutes where the Sheikh served us some mint tea with cookies and we all took the opportunity to lie down for a bit before venturing back out into the desert. From here, we hiked for about another hour where we again met up with the Sheikh who had lunch ready for us. Lunch was very simple, some chicken and rice to go with hummus and pita bread but after a long morning of hiking, we all devoured our lunch as if we hadn't eaten in days. After taking another moment to relax and lie down after lunch, the Sheikh
gave us the opportunity to ride back with him to our camp. As it had now become quite warm, 2 members of our group took the Sheikh up on his offer while the rest of us spent the next 2 hours hiking back to camp. After finally making it back to camp, we were all hot and sweaty after hiking what was probably a good 10 miles in total. The 2 members of the group who rode back with the Sheikh, were already cleaned up and resting in the shade as our tents had heated up like a sauna during the midday sun. Upon arrival back at camp, Kevin and I opened up all our doors and windows to cool down our tent and went immediately to enjoy a much needed cold shower. The rest of the afternoon was spent relaxing after such an exhausting day. Some us napped in our tents, some climbed the rock formation directly behind our camp, meanwhile Ronan, Kevin, and I walked to a nearby rock formation to do some exploring. This evening was relatively quiet as we hung out in the main tent while finishing off the remainder of the alcohol we had purchased
in Amman. It was a relaxing way to end 2 enjoyable nights in Wadi Rum.

Sun and sand...
Hi, I stumbled upon your blogs on Guatemala and Belize a while ago and found them interesting (we travelled through that region with Intrepid Travel too). Looking forward to reading about the rest of this Jordon trip now - I assume it's also with Intrepid? Cheers, Ren
