We had a wonderful day in Italy today. Beautiful sunny skies, warm temperatures. You can tell from our pictures, the jackets are gone.
We started here in Rapalla with market day, but it can't compare to the markets in France, where it was all about the food. Here it more clothes and junk. We went through it quickly, had a few morning gelatos and then headed off on our adventures.
We decided to walk to the town of Santa Margerita since it is only 2 km. Santa Margerita is also a port town with lots of interesting shops, and many restaurants and gelato options. There were 2 of Rick Steve's recommendations that were must tries. One dips their gelato in chocolate and the other just has really good gelato. We tried both and are undecided which we like better. We may have to test again.
For lunch we went with a Rick Steve recommendation again and loved it. A small Mom and Pop place that was very quaint. We had pizzas and fresh pastas. everything was great. And they gave us a big bowl of ice.
We then figured out how to take the bus partway to Portofino, but got
off early for a 20 minute hike from this gorgeous green lagoon to the town of Portofino. The hike was amazing with great views along the coastline. The town of Portofino was fairly unexciting. Expensive designer shops and $7 soda. But, the hike was worth it. We took a boat back to our home port of Rapallo which was really nice since we hadn't seen our towns from the water.
Huge yachts everywhere, hundreds of sailboats. a couple of giant cruise ships parked in the harbor. I think we will probably return to Santa Margherita if we have time for more browsing and gelato. Dee only had 6 today.
I can't believe it, but we went out to dinner after all we ate today. We didn't have reservations, so we wanted to go this restaurant we went to last time we were here that Dr Hammerman recommended. However, they are closed! We asked the concierge and he directed us to another restaurant, Romantico, that is owned by the same people. It was awesome, but I will have to do a separate food blog to describe all of its amazingness.
We only embarrassed ourselves a few times today. I fell off the sidewalk. No
Cat Suit
At market day today we found this amazing kitten swim suit top for Mary. reason, just fell. At gelato store with the dip cone, I wanted vanilla dipped in chocolate. Trying to order in Italian, I read the menu and they spell it vaniglia. That is how I pronounced in, clearly, several times trying to make myself understand. I guess I always think that repetition will win out in the end. I forgot the G is usually silent. Mary was cracking up behind me. The best was when we went to dinner. We finally found the restaurant around 7:20. Dot tried the door, but it looked like they weren't quite ready yet. There was a guy standing inside the door that looked kind of snooty, but he wasn't unlocking it. We looked at the menu in the window and tried to find the hours posted, but coudn't find any. We decided to stand outside and wait and see if they opened at 7:30. The guy inside looked at us a few times, but didn't open the door. Paul checked online and it said they opened at 6 pm. So we were really confused. They didn't unlock the door, so I went up and tried one more time, expecting it to be locked. I almost
fell into the restaurant. I think it was a push instead of a pull. Duh. They were very nice and gave us a great table right up front by the window. A short while later, the busboy goes outside and tapes a typed up sign on the door "Entrada". I think they thought we couldn't find the door.
All embarrassment aside, it was an awesome day and we had great food. Tomorrow, weather permitting, we will do the big hike from Vernsasso to Monterosso.Expect some great views.
