Thursday, August 21 Once we arrived in Frankfurt and went through customs, we said goodbye to Scott and Barbara and told them that we would meet them at this same exact location (outside of customs) on Thursday August 28. We rented an Avis rent-a-car. It only had 300 miles on it. Brand new. We decided to drive on out of town and head towards Rothenburg, an old walled city a couple hours from Frankfurt. Once we got on the Auto-bahn, we could drive pretty fast. Glenn got up to 100+ mph at one time. We stopped several times along the way at a rest stop to use the rest room. I would always look for WC (wash closet). Most of the rest stops did not have toilet paper. One rest stop, we had to pay 50cents to go through the turn-stile. We arrived in Rothenburg just around noon time. And we started to look for a place to stay for the night. We would knock on doors that had "pension" signs in them. All of the places we looked at were completely full. I started to panic, so we drove outside of town through the country roads and it was all farming land, so we didn't find anything. We drove back into town and asked about a place to stay, and they recommended that we got to a smaller town, just 5 minutes from the city center. We got 2 nights at the old farm house in Dentwang. It was comfortable and just perfect for us. By this time, we were completely exhausted from the Trans-Atlantic flight and we took a good afternoon nap. Then Glenn went downstairs and bought a sandwich and soup for our supper. I knew that after a good night's rest, we would be good for the rest of our trip.
