Myself and one roommate decided to do a little south of Spain exploring and I had heard so many things from others about the beauty and the fun they had there, so we went for 5 days!
Málaga is directly south of San-Sebastián on the opposite coast, hahah! We took the bus to Bilbao ( about an hour ) and then took a crazy short 1 hour flight. When we arrived, I was in love!!! I think the thing I loved the most about the city was the streets. We have cobble stone streets in the Basque Country, but down in the south I was mesmerized by how unique each and every street was with different stones, and designs. I absolutely loved that. I also loved the Ferris Wheel, not quite the London eye, but it was amazing because we went just at the right time and hopped on right in time for the sunset, the men working even sent us around a few extra times 😉 Since we were in the South, the sun does not set over the water there, so this was a perfect idea to go up on the wheel to see it over the magnificent
city. Gorgeous!!!
The hostel was also very cool. My roommate has been places all over the world and stayed in numerous hostels in many continents, and said this was one of her favorite hostels. They had free sangria at 8:30 every night, breakfast included, and every single night they had a pub-crawl with all the other nearby hostels. The guy was from NYC and has been living in Spain doing tourism for 6 years. He and some other guides go to different hostels, meet all the people, and all the hostels gather at the same bars and you get to know some really cool people. The first night my bunkmate was from Morocco, soooo close to málaga. I loved that about Málaga. I felt so tempted to hop on that ferry and go to Morocco and check it out. We also met someone from Jordan (country south of Syria), and he was one of the nicest kids I've ever met. He was 29, married, and was in Málaga to work but he came a few days early to vacation a little. It was fascinating to talk to him because he told us all about Syria and everything going on
there and how dangerous it is that Jordan, such a neutral and safe place, is in the middle of all the chaos going on in the middle east. He was saying how he could never even step foot on Syria land because you would get raped and killed. Also that nobody goes in and nobody goes out. It was just cool to me to talk with someone that close to all the chaos.
Málaga itself is soo beautiful. It has a port/harbor that is about a 45 minute walk all the way around. It has little bars and smoothie places and then of of course restaurants on top of each other with hostesses all competing for you to choose them. Very pressuring, funny, sometimes they come and poke your shoulder if you even just peak the menu. Overall great food and very nice people. What I didn't take into account enough was how much closer the city is to the equator - aka the exceptionally strong sun. I got some sun, but it was crazy how much it would drain you and make you tired. The sun made the sand sooo hot that going for a quick swim
in the ocean was just the right way to cool off 😊
As for how school is going, I just have to say that it is so different here. What we were taught at Glenbard West is that in college, and even there, its up to you to go, to pay attention, and work is more individual. Here, the teachers have a different style. My teacher for 2 of my classes has a style where she thinks it is okay to rudely comment on someones presentation in front of the entire class. I understand if it is incorrect, however I don't believe in someone being put on the spot and talked down to in front of the whole class. I find it crazy that she even has the guts to do that. They also encourage you to participate, and then tell you you are wrong when you do. They are tough! The assignment are also very detailed and complicated to understand. I am learning a lot from her, as she is tough but I really do think she means well. I have two classes in Spanish, (1 upper level one, and one that is art history) and
then Production of Web Messages, and Organizational Communication Business Theory. PWM is great because we are actually learning HTML and CSS, how to actually make our own websites. I think thats great to know for the future, despite my group and I having difficulties, but hey it's all a learning experience. We are also talking a lot about Advertising in the other class and how to understand them between the lines.
Good Stuff 😊, more trips to come, scroll down for Málaga pics
