On our return visit to Ronda, we took a tour of the bull fighting ring, one of only a few operating in Spain. Bull fighting is still legal in many regions although its popularity has been diminishing. In the early days, bull fighting was forbidden by the church as it was a sin to put your life (soul) in danger. Originally bull fighting was done on horses but transitioned to the matador on foot which is today’s practice. Debra refused to attend a performance and I’m less enthusiastic about a sport where the winner is pre-determined! The tour of the Ronda bull ring was interesting as it’s one of the oldest in Spain (built in 1785) and still in operation holding appx 5000 people. There is also an information/museum section that provides a good background on ... read more

Today was our last day in Malaga, so again we got up pretty late, and just wandered around town. We ate lunch at the Restaurant Malaka. We both ordered Ensaladilla and I ordered a shrimp pincho. The ensaladilla rusa was pretty good, although a bit sweet. The shrimp pincho was very good, and the only thing wrong with it was there wasn't enough. After lunch we wandered back to the pension to take a nap. We watched a movie and then about 7pm we decided to walk back down to the beach. We walked the whole beach, and stopped at a restaurant for dinner. I didn't take a picture, and I don't remember the name, but Manoli ordered ham and mushrooms and I ordered albondigas (meatballs). They were both quite good. After dinner, since we were ... read more

Today was a down day, with nothing much to do. Manoli had looked over the map to see what might be interesting. We left the pension around 11am or so, and headed to the beach. It was a fairly long walk, but pretty interesting too. We arrived at Malagueta Beach, one of the main beaches in Malaga, and after a short walk along the beach, Manoli spotted the Chiringuito Sicsu Bar. She had heard it served pretty good food, so we stopped. Pretty much every table was outside, but covered with awnings to keep off the sun. Also, since they had the area cordoned off, we had to wait in line for a few minutes to get a table. We sat down, looked over the menu, and ordered our lunch. Manoli decided to try their seafood ... read more

Today was our day to walk the Caminito del Rey, a very famous "hanging walkway". We'd booked it a couple of days ago, for us and Salome. The tour started by picking us up in a bus in front of the Ayuntamiento at like 8:30am, so we had to get up early and walk down. The bus arrived on time, and was apparently pretty full. After boarding, and our guide introducing herself, in English, Spanish, and French, we headed towards the town of Ardales. Just before arriving, we stopped at a large gas station/store for our restroom, drink and snack break. The guide told us there would be limited availability of those things at the entrance, and none during the hike. I, like everyone else, took advantage of the restrooms, and also bought a few lollipops ... read more

Today we planned on taking a bus to Nerja, a town not far from Malaga. Nerja is famous for three things; the Balcon de Europe, a balcony on a cliff overlooking the beach; the Cuevas de Nerja, a pretty famous cave in which was discovered remains from prehistoric times; and as the location for a famous television series "Verano Azul" and the boat that appeared in the series, La Dorada Primera. We walked down the street and took bus 1 to the bus station, meeting up with Salome. We waited a bit, then took the next bus to Nerja. After we disembarked in the town, we strolled down to the beach. Here is where the Balcon del Europa was located. First we walked through a small opening, then took a walkway to the beach. After a ... read more

Today we were heading to Malaga, our last stop, and our longest trip. We got up, took a shower, and packed our stuff. After checking out (by the way I highly recommend the Loop Inn Hostel), we headed down to the bus station, to catch our bus to Malaga. The bus ride took a bit over 4 hours, with one stop for a break/lunch. The views were nice, but the rest stop was even better. El Romeral was in the middle of nowhere, so to speak, but had a decent restaurant/cafe. Manoli had a chicken sandwich and I had a seafood salad. Both were pretty good. After about a half hour break, we reboarded the bus and continued our trip to Malaga. I think we pulled into Malaga around 6pm and met my niece Salome at ... read more

This morning we had planned to go out early because I want to be back in time to see the Queens funeral. The black out curtains put paid to this as we don’t wake up till 8am (that would be 7am back in the UK). I can’t believe it’s so late, Ian says I fell asleep around 6pm last night - I must have been exhausted. We decide to skip breakfast and go straight to the cathedral. The tourist office assured us it would open at 9am today although our guide book said 10. Out of date guidebook? It’s a half hour walk to the historic centre so we won’t be there at opening time…but near enough. We arrive at the cathedral. It doesn’t open till 10! We walk around the outside taking photos. It’s much ... read more

We wake late. Well no, actually we woke early and turned back over! We only have two days in Malaga so we had better get a move on! The hotel has a very nice buffet breakfast and we are hungry so we are another hour on before we are ready. We emerge on to the deserted Sunday street outside our hotel. The heat hits us like a blast. We thought it would be cooler here by now? We are walking to the Centro Histórico, it’s about half an hour on foot. We start off by the harbour and then head inland. We stumble across a modern art gallery. It looks interesting so we go inside. It’s quite a good collection and all blissfully air con so it’s a pleasant interlude. Now to Malaga centre. It’s a ... read more

November 5 Our ship docked at 9am, with easy access to the recently restored Old Town of Malaga. Malaga, we are told, is the main city of coastal Andalucia, along the Costa del Sol, and, like many of the towns we have encountered, retains a distinctly Spanish flavor, with twisting, narrow streets and a lovely waterfront promenade. Tall palm and plane trees, bougainvillea, aloes, and geraniums all made for views that said ‘tropical paradise’ alongside the clean, modern port. Picasso said of his birthplace, “to be a Cubist you have to have been born in Málaga” although I don’t see the reference, I’ll take his word for it. Malaga was a popular winter holiday site for the 19th-century wealthy. We were told that today Malaga is where the rich and famous hang out, although none were ... read more

Day 1. Mon 20 Jan Taxi came 10mins late at 7.40am, then hit unusually heavy traffic to airport so arrived at 8.20 (cost £19). No problem with bag check-in though and flight left on time at 10. 2.5 hour flight, seeing Cornwall from high up which looked good, and the snow-topped Pyrenees which looked fantastic. Sadly most of Northern and all of Southern Spain was shrouded in cloud, so didn’t see much until landing, which was quite exciting – zooming low over the Med to the airport. Eventually found the train station at Malaga but had some trouble connecting my phone (which used to automatically locate a signal, but now I had to do it manually – what is the world coming to?). Eventually texted John with my eta at Malaga Center and after the 12min ... read more
