WE SLEPT IN!

At 9:15 we walked to the "downtown" area of Homer. Not many restaurants... walked into Two Sister's Bakery. It was packed. Got in line to order the quiche of the day and were told it would be ready in 45 min. So... we opted for savory croissants and sweet pastries. Walked along the beach to get back to the Winnies. Very private and quiet. The campground was near capacity last night, but with the holiday weekend coming to a close, there has been a mass exodus. Of the campers we have met, the majority are from Anchorage and many are or were in the military. Pretty fitting for the Memorial Day weekend. There are almost 23,000 active military service members in Alaska.

Homer's claim to fame is At the "End of the Road" - The Adventure Begins. It's on the shores of Kachemak Bay, surrounded by glaciers and mountains (some of which are volcanoes) and is a fishing, kayaking, bear watching, and hiking paradise enjoyed by Alaskans and visitors, especially us! Along the coastline, the steep mountain valleys form narrow fjords. Quite the variety of natural wonders! Homer was named for Homer Pennock, a gold miner
who established the first development in the Homer Spit in 1896. This is the 2nd longest "spit" in the world. It is a natural geological phenomenon formed by "terminal glacial moraine". You might have to look up 'moraine' in the dictionary .. The Homer Spit juts 5 miles out into Kachemak Bay.

Planned to take the trolley out to the "spit" but it had mechanical issues and wasn't running...
Unhooked one of the Winnies and drove the 7 miles. Fish tacos and local beer for lunch at The Fresh Catch Cafe.

Drove around to look at the fishing boats. We did see "The Time Bandit" used in the 'Deadliest Catch'. Also were privileged to see several majestic eagles - yet another patriotic symbol for Memorial Day.

Went to several souvenir shops, but only bought a small photo album. Last visit to a grocery/wine store before heading back to the Ocean View RV Park for the second night. Nap time before returning to the "spit" for dinner at Captain Pattie's. Love these relaxing days...

Back to the park for a midnight stroll (in the light of day) along the beach to see the high tide.
