Hey you guys!!!!
Well, our fourth flight of the trip took us from Borneo to Singapore and all was fine with the flight 😊
We are staying in Chinatown (we always seem to be drawn to a Chinatown when in Asia?...) and it was such a good place to be based. Now, Singapore is famous for a few things, so we are told.... and boy!! Was those things true! Its known for being a "fine"city, we managed to avoid any fines.......what we did get was a massive dent in our bank account! Its bloody expensive! We knew it was going to be expensive based on what we paid for a room (and believe us when we say that was at the cheap end of the scale) but not that expensive! Anyway we did what any English person would do and "kept calm and got skint" 😉
What a great city it is and immaculate too. We did so much in so little time and definaitley made the most of the time we had there.
Within an hour we was in a Hindu temple with free food being thrust in our hands. There was a service if offerings
going on (hope thats the right phrase?) And what a beautiful thing it was to see. Some lovely Hindu chap came over and explained everything and made us feel extremely welcome.
We had a mooch round and did a bit of shopping before getting hawker eats on Smith Street. We did try to get into the Jumbo Seafood place at Clarke Quay for Singapore Chilli crab but it was fully booked for the night (I think secretly Adam was chuffed about that on account of not being a massive seafood fan and most importantly it being $78 per kilo, thats around 37 quid for one crab......ouch......)
We visited the Buddhist tooth relic temple and watched the monks do their thing, this is such a wonderful thing to be a part of and I always look forward this when we find one.
Headed over the Little India, Kampong glam and Haji lane areas for a mooch around and eats. All really lovely, never in all our time in Singapore did we feel unsafe or immersed in the craziness that some SE Asia cities have to offer, even though we love this craziness it was a refreshing change.
The architecture is amazing and reminded us of a fusion of old British Colonial style/space age.....
The Raffles Hotel was beautiful and well worth the visit. This is the place where the famous Singapore Sling was invented. Captain Ross recomended having one in the long bar but at $28 dollars a pop we thought better of it and came to our senses, ate a few peanuts, chucked the shells on the floor, coz thats what you do there, stole a couple of beer mats for the Addled Place, took a few photos and hot footed it out of there like a couple of peasants!
The Marina Bay Sands is the most amazing piece of architecture I have ever seen and I became a little obsessed with taking photos of it. It looks like a big ship on top of 3 buildings. Unbelievable......
We had a lovely relaxing river cruise and took in the lovely atmosphere and Singapore skyline. I have never seen so many shopping malls in all my life, I think Im allergic to them....give me a shop in the fresh air any day.
I can see why westerners flock to Singapore for work, it
really is a lovely city and wished we had a another day or so to give us chance to see all the botanical gardens there.
The whole city is getting ready for the Formula 1 night race on Sept 19th this year, even though its not really our thing we are definaitley going to watch it as it is all around the city so hopefully should be really good? Was nice to see it all unfolding......
Next stop for us is the sleepy teeny tiny Tioman Island back in Malaysia for a few days to tune in and drop out.......Staying on both sides of the island to get a real feel for he place. There is a sea turtle conservation place on the west side of the island so really looking forward to seeing that and the work they are doing.
Peace out y' all xx
