Arriving in Sweden was a bit of a challenge, I was meant to arrive at 12am from Heathrow, the flight was late leaving because the pilots didn’t have the load sheet! So we were late arriving I think we got there about 12:45. By the time I got a bus to town then a taxi it was about 3am before I got to my hostel.

My impressions of Stockholm are that it is a very easy city to get around in, everyone is very friendly, almost everyone speaks excellent English (and in all Scandinavian countries), the food is fantastic however things are very expensive. I have to say I was expecting every shop to be playing Abba songs, apart from outside the Abba museum I didn’t hear one. I was also expecting all the girls to have blonde hair, very few of them did. I was staying in the old town which still has cobbled streets, Stockholm is made up of a number of small islands and land masses, with interconnecting bridges.

As I have been to many palaces, and museums I didn’t go into all of them. I did go and see the Vasa, a Swedish war ship from the early 1600s, it was salvaged in 1961. The ship was ordered by the king, one half was made by Dutch builders the other by Swedish; they had slightly different measurements so it isn’t perfectly symmetrical. Unfortunately it sank within 20 minutes of its maiden voyage, probably because it was a very high ship (unbalanced) and the gun ports were left open. It’s amazing how well preserved the ship is and it was very impressive to see. Overall I really enjoyed Stockholm and thought it was a great city.

Enjoyed your comments. My wife and I are leaving Sept 17 for 3 weeks in Stockholm, Oslo, and Copenhagen...all by train, which we have done many times.
