Good Coffee Smile??
Downtown Kobe near Sannomiya Station It's crazy that 13.5 hour plane flights don't scare me these days. I mean, after flying to New Zealand and back (twice), what difference does an extra 2 hours really make?
Other than a bit of nasty turbulence, the flight over was fairly uneventful. AA didn't have the best choice of movies though.. I ended up watching Citizen Kane twice.
After landing in Osaka, I located my bags and then breezed through customs. I must not look too threatening, as they just glanced at my passport, counted the number of bags I had, bowed, and let me go.
First thing I had to do once I got through customs was to buy a phone card and give my housing agent in Kobe a call. He didn't answer unfortunately, so I was left wondering if there would be anyone to greet me when I arrived. I decided to just go, as I'd e-mailed him my flight info the week before, and hopped on a bus bound for Sannomiya Station in Kobe.
Thankfully Rob was there waiting for me the second I stepped off the bus. He drove me to my apartment, stopping to point out things along the
On the street where I live
My apartment complex is just down this little road. way. I live on a narrow street, just off of one of Kobe's main roads. The apartment is much nicer than I expected, and according to Rob, nicer than most he rents out. It's a 3-2 with a balcony, living/dining area, and decent sized kitchen. My room, though a bit small, has two closets with built-in shelving (big improvement from my Hataitai flat!). My flatmates are Amy and Kristy- Canadian sisters who have lived here for a few years now and also happen to work for ECC. I also found out that one of their former flatmates is from Austin, so they know all about things like Chuy's and Barton Springs. 😉 She apparently still lives in Kobe and hangs out with them fairly often, so hopefully I will meet her soon. It's always nice to have someone around who understands why hearing the word "queso" can almost bring tears to your eyes (eh Danielle?). hehe
I haven't done too much wandering yet.. mostly because it's so humid (worse than New Orleans). Today I applied for my Alien Registration card, got a cell phone, and had an interesting lunch... I only recognized about three things on my tray, but
Entry
Don't forget to take off your shoes. most of it was quite tasty! I know it's just the beginning though.
I only have two more free days until training starts so I'm going to continue to take it easy. Tonight I'm going out for dinner with my flatmates and their friends.
So far I think the weirdest thing about all of this, is that it doesn't feel weird. The only real confusion I've had so far is about how to control our television!
