We are not really at Woomera, but we have to put a place name in to be able to publish and it is the closest place I can find.
Headed out at 9:15 am Saturday morning later than expected. For the first time in ages we both overslept. Dropped over to say goodbye to Sheryl and she must have overslept as well as there was no answer when I knocked.
We are amazed at how quickly the countryside has turned green. Farmers south of Port Pirie who sowed early have already had very good germination of their crops.
We just trundled along at our normal 80 kms an hour, straight through Port Augusta and onto the Stuart Highway. Even a truck with a pilot vehicle saying wide load passed us. We think they hate us.
For the first two hours on the road we did not see a single caravan. I bet that was because we were planning on keeping track. By the end of the day we had seen lots and one new name to add to our list. Not one Jayco Sterling was sighted all day, though Dave we did see one Silverline, the new
model in Port Pirie.
Stopped for lunch around 12:30 in the first free camp site north of Port Augusta. There was a really old van about 20 feet, no brand name or so already set up for the night. He had his gen set out and running and the landcruiser was fairly up to date as well. The van was another thing. It had modifications all over it including solar panels and satellite dish on the roof, and parts of the roof edge of the van were held together with grey duct tape. We were amazed by the fact that there were no windows at all down the driver's side of the van. Maybe it was a home made job.
Back on the road and reached our planned overnight stay at Island Lagoon Lookout by 2:30 pm. There were two other vans already set up there when we arrived.
There we proceeded to drink lots of cups of tea. I don't think we have drunk that much tea in one sitting in years.
We are in the middle of nowhere, really desolate countryside with no trees, on top of a hill overlooking what is normally a
salt lake and we have 5 bars on both our mobile and our computer dongle. How come Telstra can provide this service here but not at home?
The lagoon has some water in it at present - left over from the rains last week we figure.
Arose at 7:30 am again, must be the time for this trip, and were too bone idle to pack up and move off today. We do procrastinate so well. We have both spent the day reading. GMan is now having his Nanna nap and I plan to get my head down shortly too.
We will move off tomorrow to the Memorial campsite south of Coober Pedy. We have bypassed CP so many times now. We were less than impressed the first time we went there, but have determined to do the tourist thing this time round and not be so single minded.
I can't find the usb cord to connect my camera to the computer so I have to break out the tablet and wander off and take photos with that. Could be interesting results because I have to teach myself to use it first. I will scoure the van
looking for the cord as soon as I can. Between cups of tea, reading and taking nanna naps.
