uly 27, 2013 - Saturday Today we were a bit lazy in the morning and then at 1 pm we went over to the Hatfield Marine Science Center and watched the resident octopus being fed. Her name is Sashay and she’s fed only on Mon., Thurs., and Sat. She’s lovely and turns a deep shade of dark red when excited about her food coming. She’s fed fish and sometimes shrimp. And she eats it up quickly too. They octopus they have are only kept for about 5 months and then put back into the ocean. There are so few octopus that survive that they don’t want them to stay in the Center and not be able to reproduce. Of the approximately 100,000 babies born, only 1 or 2 survive! The female dies after her babies are on their own. The crabbers sometimes will get an octopus in their trap and will take it in to the Marine Center. Then, like I said, it is only kept for 5 months and released.
In the afternoon we drove through Newport and into Nye Beach to check them out. We walked around the Nye Beach shops and enjoyed the local ambiance of
the seashore community.
In the evening we walked around the park and then out to the water and onto the pier. We saw 4 fellows who had just come in off of their fishing boat and were cleaning their catch. Marge had to go ask all about it and promised them they would be on our blog if we could take pics. They agreed, albeit willingly, but were good sports. They had many 15 - 20 lb. Albacore Tuna. There were also a lot of folks crabbing and bringing in their traps, looking for those BIG, male Dungeness crabs. No females are allowed to be caught. Lots of Sea Gulls and Murres flying all around, hoping for a tidbit left behind. A beautiful sunset over the water and the bridge, positively gorgeous.

Ah, I can almost smell the ocean!
It's delightful, reminds me of home, without the sunsets...it's still amazing that you're halfway across the world from us! So, fresh fish for linner? How about some OCTOPUS??
