Day ride to Maryborough

Another perfect sunny riding day, so we took off, after waiting for the local wildlife to get off the roads.

Our first destination was a little town called Clunes. Now for those of you who remember a really old black n white tv series, starring Peter Greaves callled Goldrush, I felt as though I would see him ride down the main street, following the wagon towed by 4 draught horses. Apparantely the do quite a lot of filming there.

We walked around and played tourists and it really is a step in time, really fantastic. The local "old time ragband" was there to entertain us in the local rotunda.

From there we returned to the backroads to Maryborough, and for those who may venture this way, it really is worth a look see. Their working railway station is fully restored to its heyday beauty. Victoria seems to take a great deal of pride in its heritage, a stark contrast to most we have seen in NSW.

We also called in and saw the only Alpaca mill still working. Very expensive, but top quality. They employ about 17 in the factory itself and a few in the shop. Quite an interesting story about a Polish immigrant who knew nothing about the industry, starting up and keeping it in the family, to this day it is run by his grandson. They have the contract for the Vic CFA fireproof blankets. The Creswick Mill is well worth a visit. I even hav

The Creswick Calambeen Caravan Park was a pleasant surprise when we arrived, plenty of trees offering nice shady grass spots. The kitchen, tho rustic is better equipped than the more expensive Top Tourist at our last stop. (note to self, do not set up camp in the furtherest site away from the amenities) It was also a pleasure to be able to sleep over the weekend without the noise from loudmouthed groups.

Wasn't the show with Peter Greaves called "Whiplash" - he was an American stagecoach driver who came to Australia to work for Cobb & Co.

The other Maryborough
Sounds like the Victorian area you are in is beautiful. I have friends going caravaning in the grampians and around Victoria for the next three weeks and they have been very interested in what you have had to say about the joint in your blog. The South Coast Ulyssians are off to Narooma this weekend and planning our trip to the other Maryborough for the AGM in about 7 weeks. Keep up the blogging.
