Thanks for tuning in. Pedro, Jay and I had an uneventful flight across the Atlantic and we are grateful for that. My powers of observation told me that Jay got a few zzzz's en route and Pedro did not. The flight was not full so I had two seats to myself. Luxury.

Just before we left we learned that the Hon. Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Christopher Chiza, would not be able to meet with us as planned on January 24th. He is accompanying President Kikwete and is out of the country. But realizing that we had planned the first segment of our trip around that visit, Mr. Chiza set us up with the Hon. Deputy Minister and other ministry staff instead. We still look forward to our visit with government officials to get a broader view of KARUCO's place in Tanzania's Ag initiatives.

This will be the first visit to Dar for each of us. We are well set up in places that are known, and have drivers that have worked with our trusty Borton Overseas. Our faithful friend, Jody, at Borton has done backflips getting us set up well. This is assuring.

In the midst of boarding, waiting, deplaning, and travel, our conversation always circles around to KARUCO. Jay can't wait to get a shovel and dig around in the dirt. (He is a soil scientist and associate dean at the U.) Pedro is already forming questions to build on the knowledge base he has gained about KARUCO over the past 15 months I have known him. (He is Director of International Programs for the College of Ag.) I look forward to building a program that makes a difference in people's lives in Karagwe.

Great Idea
This blog is a great idea and something we will enjoy as your team work through your project. We are Jay's Dad and Mom and we appreciate being included in you blog. Both os us traveled to Kenya on a two months AID project in the early 1980,s so we know what it is like to be cut off from what is going on on the other side of the world. This is a great step forward.

Response to Great Idea
Nice to have you 'with us' ! Jay told our team that this slipway area reminds him a bit of the place he was raised.
