Last year I went to a small street in Chalong, Phuket, which is mostly unknown to the average tourist to this Thai island. The average tourist is most likely in search of white sandy beaches, blue skies and clear sea. The only one of these found in Chalong is the blue skies! I went to a street where the world revolves around fitness, and people are there to try something new, get fit, have fun, meet new people, or just for a holiday!
For me it is a perfect holiday, I can train, eat healthy, and enjoy the Thai life and sunshine! I had a short break, just four days, but being only a three hour flight from Hong Kong, that is perfectly manageable. A friend from work joined me and we had four days of perfect balance, restoration and exercise!
Each morning we took part in a yoga class before the temperature rose, to ease away any aches and tightness from the day before! It was a great way to start the day.
We particularly enjoyed the Bodyfit sessions which were nice and varied, challenging, and motivating. Often we worked in pairs or teams, or as a
whole group, motivating each other as we went. We did some Bodyfit sessions at the Tiger Muay Thai camp close to where we stayed, and one session was at "the stairs" close to the beach. At the end of the intense workout, we went down to the beach to buy a nice cold coconut! The yoga and the Bodyfit are run by a fantastic trainer named Ocean, who is from Canada, but lives in Phuket and motivates people who come to Thailand in search of adventure!
In the afternoons we tried Crossfit, which was great. Short and intense, again working in pairs against the clock doing all sorts of new exercises, sometimes involving skipping ropes, tyres or weights.
We took part in the Tiger Muay Thai class once, and I also had a personal training session one day which was intense, and great exercise.
The cool part was, in between all of this, we could return to the hotel, lay by the pool, relax and read. We could have some fantastic (and cheap) Thai food, along with our fellow workout buddies. There are a couple of popular restaurants along the road full of everyone training at camp,
so you quickly recognise the familiar faces and make friends.
One particularly memorable evening was our last night when we joined the 'sunset yoga' with Ocean. We took a bus up to the Big Buddha in Phuket and very close to the top there was a grassy plateau with a view to the sea both left and right. It was a perfect peaceful spot, and we all had a yoga mat and as the sun went down we did our yoga class, and even helped each other do handstands! At the end of the class when we came to lie on our backs, I was looking up at the moon and a starry sky. It was perfect, and a great experience to end the trip with.
Great place, inspiring people, in tropical sunshine. Certainly never bored, and guilt-free laying by the pool! Perfect trip. I look forward to going back!
