Streaky Bay was one of those places full of unusual events that had you wondering what could possibly happen next.

Upon arrival there was no power in the caravan park. ETSA was installing an underground cable so the power was to be off until 3pm. It was after 5 when it finally returned.

As we drove slowly around the park to find our site a van, without any car, suddenly started rolling across the road in front of us, finally gently crashing into the caravan opposite. People ran from everywhere to help. A lady in the stationary van got quite a shock when her van got a sudden jolt. The collision knocked it off it’s stabilisers. The owners of the runaway van were on their first trip and this was their first caravan park. They unhitched the van without first placing some chocks under the wheels and didn’t put the van brake on. To make matters worse the guy fell as he tried to stop the van and grazed himself quite badly. As a haemophiliac this was not a good thing.

It just goes to show you cannot be too careful. Everyone returned to their vans to check their chocks as it was quite a sloping park in some places, as we found out ourselves.

We had chosen an ocean view site, as you do. Check out the photos to see the sea side stabilisers. It was a little unnerving to be perched so high on one end.

Our van set up, the lady next door came for a brief chat. Her husband had just been taken to hospital with heart palpitations. She was very concerned as she was left with the van and really didn’t know what was going on. Turns out they had just arrived and hadn’t even finished setting up when he started feeling funny. Again people in the park came to the rescue to finish setting that van up. The guy spent the night in hospital but came back the next morning with no obvious explanation for the incident.

Next morning we were woken by very loud claps of thunder. This storm stayed around for ages. It was loud but quite entertaining. Next came the rain.

We spent 2 nights in Streaky Bay. It was a gorgeous town with a lovely bay. The beaches were often protected but then again there were those that provided surfing opportunities. Were watched a few keen surfers who obviously knew the beaches well.

Murphy’s Haystacks were another example of weathered granite outcrops located in an unusual location. They were quite bizarre.
