The park is right against the southern ridge that surrounds Alice Springs.
Upon arriving in Alice Springs we discovered that the Stuart Caravan Park was conveniently located close to the city centre, however our site was very tight. To our surprise we managed to get the van in (and out) first go. The camera system, walkie talkies and team work proved to be very helpful. However there was insufficient space to fit the 4wd in as well so it had to be parked across the site in front. Our neighbours Barry and Yvonne (mid 70’s and very experienced) were highly amused but very interested to see how we used our technological aids. Thank God we did a decent job or they would have been giving us advice for hours!

Barry warned us about walking at night in open shoes. A couple of nights before he was looking out over the lights of the town when he felt a pain in his toe. The pain got worse and he ended up being hospitalised. It appears he was bitten by a snake in the dark. The version that we got was MUCH longer. However the warning was well received.

We ventured into town to stock up on supplies. Most items were a little

more expensive than at home (but much cheaper than in the smaller towns), and in true Greg & Joan style we even bought a whole MSA rated rump which we sliced, bagged and put in our freezer.

The Alice Springs Desert Park was brilliant. Their free flight bird demonstration was a highlight. Having large raptors fly 300mm above your head is an experience you remember.

Joan had a chat with a couple of girls undergoing SES cadet training. They were about 13 years old, from Andamooka, and were SO embarrassed that people were filming them as they practiced rescues in the Olgas the day before. Joan enjoyed her interaction with kids the same age as the students she used to teach.
