Winston v the Sandhills
pretending not to look at them Best night’s sleep since I’ve been on the road was last night. Fell asleep around midnight and woke up at 7:45 without waking up between. Amazing. AND it was the first night I used my summer quilt and shortie pajamas as well and kept the windows open.
Up and took Winston for a long walk, so long I got lost and ended up going around in a circle until I recognized my street. Duh.
A very relaxing morning, didn’t do much, and went for another long walk with Ginnie and Linus. Poor George doesn’t move well in the mornings, so he stayed home. While on our walk we saw that a vegetable seller was setting up his market, and I bought a cantaloupe, tomato, green onions and strawberries. Slightly more expensive then at the flea market, but just as fresh and good looking. Picture herein of a tortoise eating cabbage at the vegetable seller. There are tortoise nests? Holes? Homes? All over this campground. Those in high traffic areas have fences or tape around them; the one 10 yards from me is a large unmarked pile of dirt surrounding a deep looking hole. These tortoises don’t appear afraid of
anything; they leave their nests and walk all over. Winston doesn’t pay them any attention. Apparently the old manager at this Thousand Trails got rid of all outside vendors like this, but the new manager is putting all those extra things back in. Bravo! I also checked out the bulletin board in the rec hall and saw all kinds of extra activities, including a weekly trip to the Hard Rock Casino in Tampa…..on Tuesdays. We missed today, but will sign up for next week’s trip. I am going to look for a dog sitter (for pay of course) and hopefully we can enjoy this trip. It appears it’s less than 70 miles; the bus leaves at 8 and returns between 4 & 5, and I don’t know how much it costs. There are biscuit and gravy breakfasts, spaghetti dinners, bingo, line dancing, water aerobics, knitting/crocheting, tennis, shuffleboard, horseshoes, etc., etc., you get the idea.
I unfurled my awning this morning, not so much for shade, but to let it dry out. It does have one new spot of mold near the top which I will have to work on when I get home. I put it away when it
barking at them
you can see how much barking flustered the cranes! NOT! was dry. I don’t need it for shade, and I didn’t want it to get dirtier from the dust. I was feeling pretty good after accomplishing the up and down by myself, something I don’t often do.
To the pool around 12:30 and it was magnificent. The water was 85 degrees! There were so many people playing water volleyball; I didn’t join in, I just wanted to sit and crochet and listen to my book (Sookie Stackhouse Dead something or other. Winston barks, but he is eventually calming down when I am gone. I can tell he barks because there are new spittle marks on the window where I leave the shade up and there is water slobber all over the floor from his drinking so much, but when I return most often he is sleeping. I pray we have turned a corner on this. I have no near neighbors except Ginnie, so I am not so paranoid about leaving him for increasingly longer periods of time. He does like being outside; I harness and leash him on his long lead and he stalks the sandhill cranes (lots of pictures) then sits and lays in the shade of the RV and even falls asleep. I can now leave him out there for long periods. He lets me know when he wants to come in, then quickly gets a drink and goes right back out. Nosy little thing. At one point 4 cranes were in the open space behind me and he crept up to within 5 feet of them before his leash ran out, then barked and they all jumped and flapped their wings; sadly I missed that photo.
Chinese buffet for dinner and it satisfied a craving. Then we tried to find Target and totally missed it, but did stop to get gas in the car ($3.499/gallon/ouch) and Walgreens for some electrolytes and anti motion sickness meds for George suggested by a friend of Ginnie’s to help him perk up. Some of you should be happy I bought 15 sunscreen.
I am also going to try to attach a video of Winston watching the screaming sandhill cranes.
Randomness. The lady across the street offered me more grapefruits today. I couldn’t say no, but they immediately went into the garbage as I saw dogs peeing on the box yesterday. The grapefruits that I took the other day were in the box on a table, not on the ground, and the juice was magnificent.
Randomness. Are you seeing the same confusing Mitt Romney commercial over and over again like I am here in FL? It must play 4 times an hour, and it is the only commercial he has here. I wonder if it is just because the primary is coming up. I don’t understand the commercial at all. It sounds like he is trying to slam Obama, but to me it doesn’t come out that way.
Randomness. I am loving my new iphone 4S. I play with it a lot. I have downloaded a few apps, Bank of America, Oscars, Evernote, Farmville, Facebook, Foursquare, TV Guide (which is better than the TV Guide I use on my laptop) and Grocery IQ (which has a neat feature. I can take a pic of the bar code on any item and it populates my grocery list – a great feature for adding things from my kitchen that I am running out of) The Siri feature is awesome. I use it for everything: “Where is the nearest McDonald’s,” “Call Kristine mobile,” and making quick notes of things to remember to include in my blog. I hated the keyboard at first, but I hardly use it with my new friend Siri. While the mapping tool works great, it does not talk to me like Garmina. I use that feature only as a backup.
Randomness. I have a new reader of my blog. Fellow RVers Joanne and Wes from NY. They travel a lot and spend RV winter time in FL as well. Welcome Joanne and Wes, nice to have you.
