Coffee Stop !
Great night at The Granites, but we woke to drizzle and an overcast day which persisted for most of the morning which was unfortunate as we were to travel alongside the Coorong on our way to Meningie.

This area is very fragile and suffered enormously during the drought and it was great to see how quickly it has changed with the Murray flowing again and the Murray mouth opened. Birdlife was similar to what we saw last year at Lake Eyre, seemingly every type of water bird, including large flocks of Pelicans, (Storm Bird was filmed here all those years ago), through to birds of prey.

Half way to Meningie we came to Salt Creek, a campground and combined store/petrol station, so it was in for a coffee stop. What a great little stop it was, clean everything including toilets that proclaimed " my staff and i clean these each day and twicw each day, more often in summer, top up the paper. The septic gets pumped out every three months at a cost of $300 each time and only 1 in 5 people who use this convenience come into the store to purchase anything or say thank you. could you please leave a donation in the tin provided to help keep this facility running"
So we made our donation in the tin which looked like it had been attacked to gain entry, went inside and ordered bacon and egg rolls and coffee and said 'thank you' much to the amusement of everyone an then proceeded to do an audit on cars coming through that used the facility and yep, only 1 in 5 came in the shop ! in fairness they may have left a donation though, but i wonder....

Meningie as a walk up and down the main street, looking at the shops and reading the new blurb on what they are doing to stabilise and protect the banks of Lake Albert on which the town is situated. Continuing on we proceeded to cross the Murray at Wellington on the ferry before arriving at Strathalbyn. A great town full of 1850/60 sandstone buildings and houses. A stop here for Jackie and coffees'! then off to Victor Harbour where we arrived in time for an early set up and drinks before dinner...

Sandstone buildings and septic loos!
You guys are so nice leaving a donation AND going in buying something as well as saying thankyou! I can only begin to imagine what the countryside looked like when those sandstone buildings were first built in 1850/60! It would have been a busy little spot with all the paddle steamers going up and down I imagine. Once again good photos!
