We saw a lot of brightly painted houses in the Maritimes. The pink matched the roses in the front.
Hi, Everyone –
It’s Wednesday and we’re now back in the States, in Maine, in Acadia National Park.
The following photos are from Sunday, our sunny day on Grand Manan Island. Should any of you pine for an inexpensive house with an amazing water view, particularly one where huge tides roll in twice a day – Grand Manan is the place for you --particularly if you like quiet, quaintness, freedom from the madding crowds, and don’t plan to make your livelihood fishing. It’s a good place to write a book or paint or throw pots.
Since the fishing industry has gone south in the past several years in the Canadian Maritimes, a great many people have had to relocate. Inside the local bank we saw at least 100 properties posted for sale at very low prices particularly when you consider the breathtaking views. About half have been sold, fairly recently we were told by a local official, and most often to people outside the Island, many from Europe. Mostly the properties are being bought to use as income properties, using them as summer rentals
The fog on the Island is rather like a major character in the daily play of life here. It’s COMING IN or LIFTING or enveloping one softly like the proverbial blanket of fog. Or it just sits there wondering where to settle next … In some of the following photos, you can see it hovering in the distance like smoke. Imagine how important the fog is to people out at sea.
There’s a story about the strange tombstones lined up side by side and head to head. According to the woman at the ice cream store across the street, "they" did some excavating at the old cemetery a while back and somehow the bones got mixed up. They lost track of whose bones belonged to which tombstones, so this is how they resolved the issue. But what they did left a lot of the townsfolk most unhappy. You might note that some of the cemetery’s residents date back to the mid-1800’s, but I’m sure they still have kin on this little island.
