Hot, hot, hot in the Desert...
We drove through this to get to the Route 66. Driving up to the Grand Canyon (GC) was an experience in itself, driving on the historic Route 66 we passed through the heart of the Mojave Desert – the first time we had seen salt plains. We stopped off at a small town called Williams where we saw a few cowboys and a reenactment of an old shootout that took place here in the 1800’s.
We had drove, probably too much that day and it was late when we finally found camp at a petrol station; to our horror the airbed had broken – nooooooooo, so we had another uncomfortable night’s sleep ahead. In the morning we woke and did the final drive to the Canyon, and the first time we saw it was literally breath taking…it’s hard to describe in words the grandeur and beauty of this natural phenomenon. We drove around the South Rim until we found our campsite and luckily we found a spot as we are now in peak season. We had tea then went to the Desert Drive Watch Tower to watch the sunset – amazing.
4:45am we woke and took walk to watch the sun rise, a whole different experience as the different
Salt Flats
so hot that only salt left aarggh. light and the shadows paint a whole new picture. After breaky we headed up to the village where a bus service took you round the other part of the South Rim. We took a short walk and we were very lucky to see a Condor – there are only about 30 left (we saw number 26) – they are huge. Again the scenery was amazing and we saw the canyon from a few different view point.s.
After we were ‘canyoned’ out we headed up to Lake Mead for a few days to chill before the carnage of Vegas….Vegas baby – here we come!!!
