Tomorrow will be my last day to live in New York (at least for now!) and I have very mixed emotions. Part of me is ready to get on with my real life and part of me rejects reality completely. This has been the most amazing experience I ever could have hoped for. Thank you all for your support and encouragement and feedback throughout the six weeks that I have been here, and in the decision to come.
My last day has been another wonderful one in spite of rain and chilly weather. I have one night left to see a play, and I have actually seen almost everything I really wanted to see, so I decided to see if I could get a ticket to "Spiderman: Turn Off The Dark." It just seemed like I should see it, if possible, with all of the hype about it. The day started off sunny so I walked up to the box office and asked if there was one seat for tonight and the lady said she had a "rush" ticket for $30. I couldn't believe it. It's even in the Orchestra section. I was blown away! In case you don't know
about Broadway prices, the discounted tickets I've been getting have averaged probably $75. And that's after standing in line for up to 45 minutes.
With my evening planned, I had a list of the things I wanted to do before I left the city so I took the subway to 59th and 2nd to ride the Roosevelt Island Tram, something I have been wanting to do since I first arrived. It's a very quick trip (seven and a half minutes) across the East River but a great view even with the clouds, that unfortunately arrived before I did. By the time I got back across it was raining full out.
I started walking toward Bloomingdale's to buy an umbrella, since mine was conveniently in my room, and ran across All Saints' Episcopal Church of NY, which was cool! I also ran across Serendipity, the restaurant that Oprah put on the map a few years ago, known for it's frozen hot chocolate. I got my umbrella and looked around Bloomingdale's until my head started hurting. (haha) Most of you know, I dislike shopping as much as I dislike museums, so I didn't last long. But since Emily made fun
of my nightgown, circa 1995, I did think maybe I should get another one. Not at Bloomingdale's however.
I had lunch at Serendipity, including frozen hot chocolate, and enjoyed the kitchy little place. The first time I went with the family we waited for a couple of hours to get in...today I walked right in.
My next stop was a subway ride to 23rd and the Gramercy Park Hotel where Emily's friend Emily works. Emily Hughes has always been one of my favorite kids, and I wanted to see her before I left. She gave me the grand tour and this is the coolest little boutique hotel! It's full of art, including several Andy Warhol's, and customized furniture which is art in itself. Lady Gaga had an interview there when she arrived for SNL and lots of celebrities stay there. Uma Thurman lives across the street. Wonderful rooftop, garden space with couches, etc. where I think I could sit for days. It was good to see Emily and nice to see such an exclusive hotel in such a cool area!
From Gramercy Park, I walked in the rain but with my new umbrella, down to 28th, hopped
on a subway, rode to 33rd, and walked over to Macy's, the "largest store in the world," on 34th and Broadway. There I would find a couple of new nightgowns and also get my watch battery replaced. From there I had one more cheesecake to try at Daiuto's Pastry Corporation, at 8th Ave. and 30th, to complete my cheesecake tour of NY. On the way, I passed the massive Post Office!
I came back to my 'hood on the subway and stopped to get my nails done one last time by Nana, from South Korea (Incheon), and came home to rest before the dark gets turned off.
I did get a comment from Rob about my last blog title, which, I admit, was unfortunate! I could have been alluding to the end of the world tomorrow but in all honesty I wasn't! So I want everyone to know that Emily made it home to Ft. Worth safely and soundly about 2 o'clock this morning! Rob's comment:
".. this one was definitely the winner of "Worst Blog Title Ever."
