Virgin Mountains Arizona - Zion National Park, Utah March 18
Left the Virgin River campground and headed North on I-15 towards Zion. Stopped in St George, Utah at the MacDonald's to get on the internet and have a cup of coffee. Then went to the SuperWalmart there to get some groceries as no telling what would be available in the park.
From St George it was a short hop North on the I-15 and then getting off on Hwy 9 going through Hurricane, La Verkin, and Springdale to Zion. When I got to Zion I used my National Parks Pass to get in and immediately went and staked out a campsite at the South Campground. I filled out the form and put the slip on the post and leaving my bright red Office Depot bag on the picnic table to let others know this site was taken went back to the fee area and put the envelope with $16 for my campsite for the night into their pole for it.
I then drove up the road into Zion and checked out all the sights. As it was I was lucky as April 1st everyone will have to take the shuttle and not be permitted to take their personal auto up this road. Most everything had a 1 to 2 mile round trip hike to it. I usually don't mind a hike but for some reason didn't feel like it today so contented myself with what I could see without a hike.
When I got back to my campsite I walked around it a bit and then down by the river. There really was a splendid view of the River with the red cliffs behind it.
After that I had my picnic lunch and watched my neighbor almost catch himself on fire trying to light a log he had gathered up by pouring half a can of Colemans stove fuel on it. It created quite a fireball and he was really lucky not to get caught on fire. It did however start the log on fire and it burned for quite a bit then it went out and all the smoke blew on their tent so they had to sleep in their little car for the night.
The plan for the next day was to go to Bryce Canyon National Park via Hwy 9 East out of Zion, but I had to go through a tunnel for which I would have to pay a $15 permit fee and the road had lots of squiggles on the map showing switchbacks so I decided to take it easy on my truck and go back West out of the park and up the I-15 to Crescent City then across on Hwy 14.
So that was the plan.......
