After rushing around all morning to pack our spreading mess back into our small rucksacks, we caught a bus to the train station, but the tickets to the Airport were really expensive so we decided to spend a couple more dollars on a cab for a much smoother journey.

At check in we were interrogated about our onward travel from Bali. We had fortunately booked a flight from Bali to Singapore just a few days before and had the details on out Netbook, without this flight they wouldn’t have let us board, despite a ticket out of Beijing 3 months later and an obvious round the world itinerary... a bit of a problem when airlines “cabin share”, but don’t “information share”).

On arrival at Dempensar we organised to stay at Alit Beach in Sanur and shared a taxi with a couple of Swiss guys. When enquiring how much an addition night might cost upon arrival we were surprised that it was a higher rate to book direct and we’d actually got a really good deal.

As it was late and dark we grabbed some dinner at the hotel restaurant and hit the sack.

Alit Beach Bungalows was a really nice resort with several swimming pools and overlooked the beach, so we decided to stay for a day before moving on to the Gili Islands. Joanne woke early and wandered down to the dock for sunrise where hundreds of people were already queuing for the 1st local ferry. Then she enjoyed an early swim in the first 25m pool we’d encountered on our travels - all this before breakfast.

Wandering aimlessly around town, we didn’t find much of interest, but were overwhelmed by the sheer amount of mopeds. Our first glimpse of South East Asia. We wandered through some markets and along the beach before Joanne couldn’t hold back any longer and was forced to treat herself to 4 hours of pampering for the unearthly sum of £3 an hour! Richard also indulged for an hour, before escaping back to the comfort of our beach bungalow where he enjoyed 3 hours peace for the first time in 3 months :o)

Saigon
Yes - Saigon was something else - Thankfully we'd become adept at shuffling across roads despite the traffic by then - otherwise we may have never made it past the pavement! Very relieved to see more cars in China.
