Monday 20th December 2010 (Nacula Island – Eco-Haven Resort - Waya Lei Lei) A boat trip to Sawa-I-Lau caves from the film the blue lagoon was on the agenda today. The 1st cave was a large hall like space which was open to the sky, but the 2nd could only be reached via an underwater tunnel... As we had snorkels we were two of the first to enter into the almost pitch black cave, with the only natural light coming from a small hole at the far end. We made our way toward the light on our own and were surprised that it was actually brighter under the surface of the water than above. After exploring on our own a guide led the rest of the group to us with a torch for visibility and told local legends of the caves, it was good to hear them but I was pleased we’d had a few minutes of peace in the cave on our own.
We got back to board the Yasawa Flyer to Waya Lei Lei our second island, where after a spicy dinner we were treated to a professional fire dancing show.
Tuesday 21st December 2010 (Eco-Haven Resort - Waya Lei Lei)
During the heat of the day we simply chilled and sun bathed. We wanted to join a 2pm boat guided swim to the island opposite, but after waiting, and being assured the boat was going, it never happened - no boat and too strong a current. Instead Joanne went for a Bobo massage and Richard went fishing. Neither Richard or any of the others on his boat caught anything, only the guide caught a fish, which was tiny, about 10” long. The water was rough and we were back late, Joanne almost called the coast guard!! ;o)
Wednesday 22nd December 2010 (Waya Lei Lei - Nadi) Up at 5am for a Sunrise walk (a.k.a. vertical climb) to the top of the cliffs on Waya Lei Lei. Our guide marched off and we followed, with the pathway lit by the brightness of the full moon and a few head torches. The resort doggie also accompanied us, although she took her own route up, obviously not a conformist. Stopping occasionally to catch our breath the ascent took nearly an hour and we were worried we might miss the sun rise as the sky
brightened around us, but we arrived with a few minutes to spare clambering across rocks with a sheer drop to the right, our guide leading the way in flip flops! It was a beautiful sunrise overlooking the other islands and well worth the effort and sleep deprivation.
After breakfast we went island hopping, allowing us to explore other islands and resorts without the hassle of packing our bags and moving every day. After a cruise around our Island we arrived at Octopus, an upmarket family resort with all the mod cons including a swimming pool, cold water on tap and 24 hour electricity! We had heard the snorkelling was good but after getting in were blown away by the reef. It started about 2m from the beach, but the water was very shallow so we had to navigate to the deeper coral further out. As the reef was so high the colours were bright and vivid, something you lose in deep dives. At the reef wall edge 30m out it suddenly dropped off into 10m of open water where the fish became more diverse. After an amazing experience we swam back to shore but missed the channel and ended
up floating precariously over sharp coral in just 30cm of water – desperately trying not to cut our bellies.
Our route out had taken us across a sand bank at high tide, however when we returned a couple of hours later the sandbank was in full view and we got out to walk between the 2 islands. The final stop for lunch was Kuata, on the island opposite where a few friends were staying.
Our cruise finished in time for us to check out and board the Yasawa Flyer back to Nadi. We were dropped off at the original guesthouse Tropic of Capricorn so thought we might as well spend the night. The electric was not working in room they gave us so we were given a bigger room with complimentary beg bugs. We switched again with a discount after lugging our bags up and down the stairs several times.
