Barcelona - Spain "The great book, always open and which we should make an effort to read, is that of Nature." - Antonio Gaudi.
Of course. When in Bar-TH-elona the first thing that hits you is GAUDI-A-RAMA! I love the guy, he was brilliant for his time, but there is so much more to this stunning city than its reputation would like to suggest. So it´s cold here, not as cold as Austria, but there is a definite chill to the air... but the sun is shining off the ocean and the smell of the sea makes me feel all nostalgic... of home. But really that´s what travel is all about, to make you appreciate where you come from. I´m currently in a fit of jealousy after hearing that Australia will be having a 42 degree Australia Day! I WANT WARMTH DAMN IT!!!
So this is the third day I´ve spent in Barcelona. I´m currently on La Rambla, the main market street in Barcelona. It´s packed with people coming to check out all of the funky little stores and what they have on offer. There are enough performers here to fill a small country! My favourite so far has been the gargoyle
Gaudi´s Church
Barcelona - Spain man who yells out at little kids. Nice.
Yesterday I will officially name the Gaudi Day of my stay here. I started at the Park Guell, a park set high up on a hill side and embroided with Gaudi´s designs. It was beautiful soaking in the sun and looking out over Barcelona to the sea. A definite change from the rest of chilly Europe! From here we headed down a street so steep that they installed escalators for the poor buggers walking up it! Quite funny actually. We made our way down to the Sagrada Familia and had a look inside the mind of the master that was Gaudi... he really appreciated his nature and this is certainly visible in the architecture of the basilica. It was officially named a minor basilica by Pope Benedict in November 2010... so when we walked in it was walking in to an official Catholic church. We got a glimpse at Gaudi´s tomb, had a look around the museum and then headed to Gaudi´s House. I walked up Gracia Street a bit further and found the apartment block he designed too. Last night we had our official Spanish meal... tapas of course. Wouldn´t
Choir
Barcelona - Spain mind finding some churros today at some point.
I´m wandering the streets of Barcelona solo today. I´ve so far wandered the gardens in Parc de la Ciutadella (and sat on the trunk of the Mammoth.. hehe), through the Arc de Triomf (Barcelona style), walked around the main square and down La Rambla. I´m going to head to the olympic site after this and back down to the beach and the marina do some r&r.. maybe some sketching / writing / reading. Keen as mustard (as Taryn and RamiNOUR would say!).
Heading back to Italy tomorrow to stay in Lorenzago di Cadore with the Piazza family for 5 days.
So until then,
xxxxxx Lex
