Lunch stop along the road from Redding to the coast. November 15 – 19, 2010
Heading back to Oregon.
Monday morning Dwain stopped by a Goodyear Tire store to have them check all the trailer tires and to buy a new spare for the trailer. All the other tires looked okay, so we decided to continue our travels with the new spare, “just in case”!! We hit I-5 north again in Sacramento, CA, and drove up the freeway north to Redding. The only thing of note along the way was how dry the country was. There were many large signs announcing that Congress was to blame for turning California into a Dust Bowl!! Apparently they have passed some kind of legislation that is limiting access to water and in this part of the country, irrigation is the life of the farm. We stopped overnight in a Premier RV Resort in Redding, CA.
Tuesday morning we headed out on Hwy. 299 across the Coastal Mountains toward the coast. The windy, twisty road took us up over four mountain passes ranging from 3,300 ft. to 2,800 ft. as we crossed the coastal range. We were thankful again for a beautiful day to travel and were glad to be back into
Redwoods State Park
Elk in their natural habitat. the land of mountains, tall trees and rivers and streams flowing with clear, sparkling water. At lunch time we managed to find a place to pull off the road right by the river and enjoyed the scenery as we had our lunch in the warmth of the trailer. Soon after lunch we came down onto the coastal road, Hwy. 101, and headed north again. When we reached the Redwoods State Park, it was time to get out and enjoy the quiet majesty of the tall trees. Since this is “off season” we were the only ones on the trail through the woods, and it was SO QUIET!! The pictures will give you some idea, but this is one of those places that you really need to experience for yourself.
Soon we were crossing the state line into Oregon (the state we love). As we drove up the coast we delighted again in the sight of the beautiful coast and the rolling surf. That night we camped in one of Oregon’s beautiful State Parks at Bullard’s Beach and listened to the storm as it pounded us with wind and rain all night. The storms rolling in off the ocean made
for some pretty dramatic scenery to photograph the next day, especially at the lighthouse at the mouth of the Coquille River.
The drive Thursday along the coast road was pretty stormy and now the temperatures were starting to drop. We made it as far as Lincoln City for the night, anxious to get into Salem before snow started falling on the Coastal Mountains. After putting in some long days on the road on our trip from Houston, the drive from Lincoln City to Salem felt like a short hop and jump!! Managed to unhook our RV at the Premier RV Resort in West Salem and then joined Mike and Noreen for lunch just before he headed out to California for a work related conference!! We will spend the weekend with Richard and his girls and then have Thanksgiving together with our family here in the Salem area.

So glad to hear you got into Salem okay despite the stormy weather. No doubt it is a very good feeling to be back in familiar territory. Say 'hi' to the rest of the family for us. Looking forward to some Thanksgiving Day pictures of everyone enjoying some turkey. Love you all. Miss you lots.
