California, North on I-5.
November11 – 15, 2010
We put in a couple of long days after leaving Albuquerque,NM. Friday we drove across the Mojave Desert quite close to the place where Dan did his field training. Also went right by Edwards Air force Base where they land the space shuttle if they cannot land in Florida. Of course, now they cannot even get it in the air!!
It was an interesting day. Most of our drive was on I-40 again, a 4- lane divided hwy. across the desert. As soon as we crossed the Colorado River into California we noticed quite a deterioration in the road surface - it really needed to be repaired!! Also, when we ran out of Freeway we noticed that work had been begun on making a 2 lane road into a 4 lane hwy., but the work was just abandoned. Abandoned construction sites, depressed small towns and the road conditions all give evidence to the fact that California is in a state of severe financial decline.
As I was driving along I-40, this car came up beside us and the lady was pointing to our trailer, indicating that something was wrong.
I pulled over onto the shoulder and they also pulled off and backed up to us. Then the gentleman told Dwain that one of the trailer tires was not riding properly - it was wobbling a lot, indicating that something was wrong with the tire and he did not want us to have a blow-out. They knew the road well and told us that there was a Rest Stop at the bottom of the hill, so we drove there very slowly with the flashers going. When we arrived at the Rest Stop this couple were there waiting for us!! They too own a 5th wheel, and knew the things that would cause damage to the trailer. So Dwain took off the tire and sure enough the tread was separating. He put on the spare which was the original spare and had never been used, so it was a new tire. We had lunch in the trailer, and then went on our way. How thankful we are for people who cared and took the time to warn us of the danger!!
Later that afternoon we were stopped in a long traffic back up. It became obvious that there had been
an accident a little way ahead. After a while a helicopter came in and landed on the road ahead to air-evac someone to the hospital. Then a couple of fire trucks passed, then an ambulance. Two tow trucks came up along the shoulder to get to the accident scene. It brought back all those memories of Bekah's accident!! Apparently this was a head on collision on a 2 lane road. As we passed the wreckage, it was obvious that people had been killed in this accident. The whole cab of the pickup was totally flattened and the other small car involved had been hit right on the driver’s door!! Again we thanked the Lord for sparing Bekah and the girls and for allowing them to heal so well.
So, with those two events, it made it quite a traumatic day!!
This weekend we were in the Sacramento area where Steve and Rosi Sept and their girls live. Steve was on staff with us at Grace church in Abbotsford and moved here with their 4 girls about 4 years after Dwain left Grace church. That was in 2005 and the girls were still quite young then. Over the years
they have grown into beautiful young women!! Spent the day together on Sunday, joining them for service at Lakeside Church in Folsom, CA where all the family is involved in some area of the children’s ministry there. The afternoon of visiting, reminiscing about the years we were together in Abbotsford and catching up with their family and the things the girls are involved in was such a blessing.
We have decided to skip Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks this time and head on up the I-5 to Redding. From there we will head out to the coast and follow the coast road up Oregon and then on into Salem where we plan to spend time with Mike and Richard and their families.
