If you, or I, thought that Saigon was busy .... then Hanoi has a surprise for you. Here, traffic really does come in waves. Motorbikes drive over the sidewalks because there's just not enough space on the roads! So as a pedestrian, you're constantly getting out of the way for motorbike drivers, haha.

But ... the downside is ... it's a city. A big one. With a loooooooooooot of people. And what they told me seems to be true. There's no warmth in the people here. It's everyone for him/herself. It's just not the same as in Saigon. Prices are up, smiles are down.

I sent out a couch surfing request when I was at the airport in Danang. But I have not received a reply. Which I expected, it was very short notice.

But the big question in my mind is ... what now?

I'm already in Hanoi ... I have 12 days left! But I don't want to spend a lot of time in Hanoi, because I don't like it here at the moment. Yann (I always wrote Jan before, my mistake), the French guy I met for 1 night in Saigon (who came up with the karaoke idea) is here too! I've been to where he stays a few times, but he wasn't there. If I know Yann even a bit after that one night in Saigon, I know that he doesn't like Hanoi. He sent me a message, which I read at the airport in Danang, telling me that he's in for a trip through Ha Long Bay or Sapa.

But ... I think he's not in for the trip that I have in mind. Even more. I think nobody is in for the trip that I have in mind.

Scamming is out of control here in Hanoi. Scamming takes on all forms and sizes here. Including setting up fake hotels for a night by renting out rooms in abandoned buildings. And one of those scams is of course ... cruises through Ha Long Bay.

It's raining complaints about those. People don't get what they're promised. Cruises are cut short, the itinerary is not kept, very bad food, rude personnel that doesn't speak English, the list goes on.

And you know what? It's my friggin' birthday in 2 days, and I'm seeing Ha Long Bay. And I have -no- intention of worrying if all will be ok. So therefore I've been thinking about taking a more expensive cruise. And by that, I mean 430 USD and more (probably more as 430 USD is the lowest price). I know it's a little expensive. BUT ... as the Lonely Planet guide says ... people get what they pay for. There are tours for 40 USD as well. And it's the low cost tours that they receive all the complaints for of course.

But the more expensive one ... will provide all that it promises. Stunning views. A relaxed environment on a beautiful boat. 3 days and 2 nights on the waters of Ha Long Bay and even a personal chef available to you 24/7, hehe. It comes down to 3 days enjoying the view, great food, no worrying (no scams, no potentially bad street food, no thinking "will all my stuff be there when I get back?", etc). And, it's 3 days off the 12 days I have left.

So I'm really contemplating it. The one thing I would like to know ... is how much will it really cost? There's no prices on the site of course. I'll send them a reservation to ask for a price.

My mind is chaotic right now. You may have noticed that reading this post 😉 But I have a lot on my mind at the moment :
- get out of Hanoi!
- will anyone go with me? Yann very maybe (probably not)
- where to find Yann and Caroline tomorrow?
- a girl I know from Belgium is also coming to Vietnam (Saigon, Hanoi, Ha Long Bay and Sapa) ... where and how will I meet her?
- what to do about Ha Long Bay?
- and more =)

So now this is officially a weird blog entry. Any questions? Just leave them behind 😉 I'm going to relax a bit!

bijna je verjaardag en een heel eind van huis, zoals je in je blog vermeld neem toch maar de duurdere trip hopenlijk valt die dan mee en kun je gerust zijn dat alles goed georganizeerd is .Trouwens gun jezelf maar een beetje ontspanning en rust het is toch uw verjaardag niet? ps. uw post is al reeds toegekomen thuis en zijn allen benieuwd wat je gekocht hebt, hier gaat alles zijn gewoon gangetje verder alles okee. ZO een gelukkige verjaardag en dikke kussen van mij alvast let goed op uzelf en tot gauw hoop ook dat je nu geen maagproblemen meer hebt?mama daaaaaaaaag

Ik heb gemaild om een prijs te vragen, maar nog geen antwoord gehad. Misschien vandaag nog eens proberen. Geen maagproblemen meer gehad. Desondanks dat ik ondertussen in Hanoi toch gegeten heb op een plaats waar je zou kunnen verwachten dat het niet bepaald uit de netste keuken kwam. Integendeel. Maar no problems so far. =) Bedankt voor de wensen, maar 't is morgen pas zover he ;)

Van mij ook alvast een megazalige verjaardag daar aan de andere kant van de wereld. Omdat ik niet weet hoe groot het tijdsverschi juist is, en wanneer je dit zal lezen type ik het nu al maar: HAPPY BIRTHDAY. Geniet van uw verjaardag! Zoals uw ma zei, hopelijk blijven de maagproblemen nu definitief weg. Ik denk dat ik ook voor de volle pot zou betalen voor de cruise, of in ieder geval voorstander voor zijn. Laat ze maar andere toeristen scammen denk ik dan. 430USD is niet weinig (dik 300 EUR zeker?) maar ik denk toch dat ik daarvoor ging. Even geen zorgen van waar te overnachten, waar je rugzak te laten, waarschijnlijk ook beter eten,... Misschien ben ik wel een verwend nest en een luxepaard maar ik denk dat ik het ook zou doen. Je zit ook niet elk jaar in Vietnam en het zou zonde zijn om een cruise van 40$ te nemen die dan ineens te kort blijkt te zijn. In alle geval: Ha Long Bay wordt volgens mij het hoogtepunt van uw trip. Je ziet het niet via het blog natuurlijk maar ik zie letterlijk groen van jaloezie. :) (Hier wou ik wat Vietnamese tekens plakken maar het ging niet. Epic fail. :( ) Geniet morgen/straks van uw verjaardag! Yves
