In mid-2008, when I decided to go back to university to get my masters degree, I thought that the price of that choice was going to be giving up travel for a couple of years. And then I had the chance to go to Bolivia in May 2009 to do field work. And a few months later, I was on my way to Portland, Oregon to attend a geological conference.

I didn't have a lot of time to get out to explore Portland, but I spent one memorable evening with a friend I'd met in Prague (Praha: The Unbearable Lightness of Being). It was great to hang out with him again, and meet his girlfriend--I hope they enjoyed the evening as much as I did.

They had given me some recommendations for things to see on my last morning in the city, but I woke up feeling a bit under the weather on my last day, and so spent the morning exploring the area near my hotel. I'm sure the queasy stomach had nothing to do with sampling as many of Portland's amazing microbrews as possible over the previous four days...

I wandered through the downtown area, picking up a coffee on the way, and walked along the river for a while before returning to my hotel and exploring a wee bit of the arts district a few blocks away from it.

Portland, from what I saw in my brief time there, is a great city and I hope to visit there again someday!
