Breafast at Childers...
Day 6: Agnes Water to Inskip Peninsula (Great Sandy National Park), via Rainbow Beach

The previous night we had identified a remote camping area in the Great Sandy National Park, opposite Fraser Island. We couldn’t think of a better location for our last night so rose early in order to get there in good time. On the way we stopped at Childers for breakfast and to see the memorial to the many backpackers who died there in 2000 as we knew a couple of people who survived that tragedy. A lovely lady showed us around the new building and we left with a nice impression of the town and people.

We arrived at Rainbow Beach and set off to see a huge sand dune called the Carlo Sandblow which covers over 15 hectares. It was impressive to say the least with amazing views of the countryside on one side and coast on the other. After lunch it was more body surfing lessons for Nat on Rainbow Beach with some huge waves causing some decent wipe-outs.

Ready to head to our campsite, we checked in with the QLD Parks who control access to the area and registered for a

camping spot. Most of the area is by 4x4 access only but there are a couple of locations where we could get our van in around Inskip Peninsula.

We found an idyllic spot only fifty metres from the sea and just ten meters from the beach and setup for the afternoon before dragging our chairs, esky and snacks onto the beach to enjoy the afternoon sun. The peninsula is very rugged and mostly sand so four wheel drives can drive on the beaches in order to access certain areas, hence the speed limit sign and tyre tracks in the photos! We settled in for the afternoon watching the sun go down and enjoying our own ‘private’ beach. With Fraser Island just across a sea channel, we had an amazing view and even spotted dolphins breeching for air. As the sun went down we knew it was the best place to spend our last night in QLD and we felt like we had found our own piece of paradise and somewhere we will definitely return one day... Mainly so Dan can drive on the beach!
