starting out
day 1 of our trip Ok....this blogging thing isn't very convenient, especially while you are living in a van/finding state parks in which you can camp so entries are going to be more periodic with the highlights.
Now that we're here, though, we need to find somewhere to stay. It's getting late and this is the first weekend of spring break so all the campgrounds are full. It looks like we are going to be trying the ole' futon mattress in the back of the van...this should be interesting.
Sooooo, we made it to Savannah, Ga. It is pretty amazing to think that this is jsut the first leg in such a long journey. It's gradually sinking in that we are going to make it around thw whole United States. It's taking some time for the implications of it to sink in though, I suppose this is all territory I've seen before, but I get really excited about going west through the deep south, Texas, and onward to California.
We left Savannah on Saturday afternoon after puttering around and wearing poor little Joy to a frazzle in the heat. I have to say I really miss the being in the south. It just
seems like everyone talks to everyone and Joy certainly is a great conversation starter.
After Savannah we made our way to St. Augustine, the oldest town in North America, which turns out is really just a tourist trap, but beautiful nonetheless.
We then moved onto Titusville, Fl which is directly across the water from Cape Canaveral and Kennedy Space Center. We were then fortunate enough to watch Space Shuttle Discovery perform the last night launch of the space shuttle era. There are only 3 missions left and all are daytime launches. This was something I have wanted to do since I was a little kid and I feel extremely fortunate to have been able to in my lifetime. This really is the end of an era.
After watching the shuttle take off, we started towards western FL and the panhandle area. We stopped in a small town south of Gainesville called Micanopy and rested at a local cafe for lunch. Micanopy is a charming small town, with warm people and laid back atmosphere.
After relaxing, we began the long journey along the coast towards Gulf of Mexico. The route along the coast was mostly dotted with
small beach communities, summer houses, and fishing boats. We drove late into the night without finding an open place to stop for food. Finally we found a cute beach town named Carabella, and decided to sleep looking out into the bay. Despite being exhausted from all the driving, it was a bit mind blowing to have driven along the Gulf of Mexico.
The Next stops were Panama City and Pensacola. We were hoping for some sun and beach time, but the weather was not permitting. We were able to stop along the beaches and let Joy get into the water. She was hesitant at first, but soon realized she is indeed a water dog! Realizing a storm was pending, we reluctantly abandoned the warm sun and headed towards Mobile, Alabama. Delectable seafood and mouth watering BBQ awaits us.
Week 2 will hopefully bring an end to Mobile and onto New Orleans! Pictures to come soon.
