Koh Samet
Lucy and Chris at a place just near paradise Hello All,
It's 9am on a slightly hungover sunday morning as I write this. Me and Lucy went to the backpacker land of Khoa San Road last night and didn't end up getting in until about 1.30, by which time we'd had quite a few Changs and cocktails. It's been a particuarly boozy weekend as we went out with my workmates on friday after work for food and drinks, which was also a lot of fun. When we go out with them we go to the places we wouldn't normally find and they delight in getting us to try as much of the local (spicey) food as possible. They've all gone out of their way to make us feel welcome - almost every day somebody in the office drops of some kind of snack or other at my desk after lunch. I'm not sure if there's some kind of in-joke they have whereby they're trying to get me really fat or what, but it's all very nice of them.
We haven't yet updated you on our adventures last weekend in Koh Samet. As you can see from the photos, it was a pretty nice place! As it turned out,
Speedboat to Koh Samet
Lucy looking slightly windswept... we even got driven there in a minivan as my boss was (unnecessarily in the event) concerned about us driving there because of all the holiday traffic. To get to the island you needed to take a speedboat for 30mins which was an experience in itself and well worth the £4 price. There wasn't a huge amount to report as we spent most of the time lounging and reading on the beach and the remaining time was taken up by eating, or a little bit of snorkelling for me. We're just planning the next island adventure - this time it will be Koh Chang during Thai new year holidays in April.....
Yesterday was a nice relaxing day in Bangkok (yes, there can be such a thing!). The biggest park in the city is a 10 minute walk away so we spent the afternoon having a picnic, lounging by the lake and then took one of the bright yellow duck-themed pedalos onto the water. It certainly had it's differences to Wollaton Park on a saturday afternoon, not least the massive Komodo Dragon type lizards that they have roaming around - see pics. One of them was very obliging and having
Koh Samet
Awaiting Lunch caught a fish in the lake, swam right over to the bank where we were sat and proceeded to swallow the fish whole, about 2 yards away from us! Feeding the fish is a popular pastime for locals which results in there being absolutely thousands of catfish in the lake - we were feeding them bread from the pedalo and were at one point surrounded by about 50 or 60 of them swimming over each other to get at it. The poor old turtle that we were also trying to feed was just too slow. Watching the open-air aerobics was quite funny too - in one area there were about 100 folks of all shapes and sizes wiggling about to some cheesey Thai pop which was played at very high volume.
I'll leave this entry there but rest assured it's not all fun and frolics. Well, it is for Lucy (her new job doesn't start for another 2 weeks), but my job keeps me busy for 10 or 11 hours most days. I'm starting to enjoy it now though and will be off to Vietnam for my first trip there in about 3 weeks.
Look after yourselves

Helena has just informed that komodo dragons can climb trees and run very fast so if they start to chase you, you are in a nut shell 'done for'.xxxxxxxxxxxxx
