We scooted out of El Centro, CA and headed for the Slabs, which is short for Slab City, in the desert just east of Niland California, near the Salton Sea in Southern California.
Slab City is not a city, just a collection of RV's scattered around a large area. It is on the site of an old abandoned Navy base called Camp Dunlap, used during World War II. All the buildings have been leveled and only the slab floors remain, thus Slab City. Camping is free and RVers of all types gather to socialize and hold flea markets. The Slabs is not for everyone, and my wife and dog say it is not for us. They like their full hookup amenities.
So, we visted, took some pictures, and did not stay. We continued on along the east shore of the Salton Sea with the hope of reaching Joshua Tree National Park.
To our frustration, the two decade record breaking rains of the last two weeks washed out Box Canyon Road and required us to take the long way to reach Joshua Tree.
Because of time limitation (we wanted to return to home base by dark), we explored

View of the slabs. only the southern end of Joshua Tree National Park. But we were able to get some nice photos, with a desire to return to the park for a longer visit in the future.
This time next week, we will be spending our first night hooked up in the driveway of my art gypsy friend Al, in Yuma.
Enjoy the photos. Stay tuned; more to come.
