We have now left Malaysia behind and are on the Thai island of Ko Phangan. This island is famous for it’s full moon parties, half moon parties black moon parties - any excuse for a party to be honest. Fortunately we have found a really nice resort on the opposite side of the island to Hat Rin Beach where the parties take place.
We are staying at a place called Had Yeo. It’s a bit more upmarket to the places we normally stay but as it’s low season prices are low. We have found a fantastic room with equally fantastic bathroom and large balcony. One of the best things is the fact that everything works! We even have spotlights on the ceiling with a dimmer switch.
All this for 500 Baht a night (that’s about £9).
The whole area is a complete contrast to Kapas, our last main location. The small sandy bay has resorts and restaurants tumbling down the hillside onto it all along it’s length instead of lush jungle, but there’s still a relaxed atmosphere. Behind the resorts are forest clad steep hills so it’s very pretty if you can look past the huge electricity cables
Haad Yao Beach
Thanfully only a small part of the beach was this busy. that comes hand in hand with tourism. It’s nice to have a choice of bars and restaurants
One day we hired transport and explored the island. We searched out all the little coves north of where we’re staying, most were less developed than our beach but the sand was nowhere near as nice. We then took the main road down through the centre of the island, stopping off at a waterfall that was completely dried up and an ornate temple that was completely deserted apart from one monk. It looked very picturesque sitting high up on the hillside. After calling at the port to try and figure out the best and cheapest way to re-new our visa we set off to the famous Hat Rin Beach. The roads leading to it were very hilly making the journey seem more like a roller coaster ride! Hat Rin had two beautiful beaches but due to a recent heavy downpour the white powder sand was more like wet concrete. There was also a small but scruffy little town. There was evidence of the crazy parties all around.
After our trip around the island we came to the conclusion that we have
found the best place to stay on the island so plan to stay until it’s time to go to Myanmar (Burma) to get another 15 day visa. After much asking around and researching on the Internet we decided this was the cheapest and least hassle option, and besides we get to visit another country!
We visited another nice beach, Bottle Beach, one day whilst on a snorkel trip but to actually get there to stay would have been expensive as you can only get there by longtail boat.
