I woke up that morning feeling absolutely disgusting... The sore throat turned into a full blown cold which totally sucked. I missed check out time ... 10! But they let me go without paying for another night. There was thunder and lightening outside so I threw on my raincoat, packed my bags, and trekked back to the train station. Cant say I'm going to miss Florence at all.
The train ride was fairly uneventful, about three hours, and I slept the entire time. I got to Venice to find the sun shining, and the sky SO blue. When I stepped out of the train station it was kind of like a dream. There was a band playing on the steps of the terminal, and the Grand Canal is right in front of you, the lightest color of green. I knew I had to take a water bus, so I bought a ticket and jumped onto the vaporetto... Not so easy considering you have to carry your bag, not wear it, and it's PACKED, but I managed. Got off on the right stop and managed to find the hostel without any problems. The hostel was beautiful, it's an old museum and has SO much character... Too bad the people running it are idiots. There were numerous problems while I stayed there, including wet sheets, a dorm room of 12 when I paid for 8, ONE bathroom for 22 girls... Ugh. But I dropped my bags and went out to explore.
Venice is kind of surreal. It's all a maze of cobblestone alleyways, bridges and canals. Little random shops hidden away everywhere. It felt so safe. Unfortunately it was like 5 in the evening, and totally packed with tourists, so I did a little bit of shopping, checked out St Marks square, took a bunch of pictures, and then went back to the hostel to hit the hay.
The girls who were in my dorm woke up the next morning at 5 to leave, and unfortunately I couldn't fall back asleep so I decided to get up and explore. Best idea of my entire trip... I thought it was surreal packed with tourists? It's AMAZING when you are the only one walking around, other than the street sweepers, and eventually, parents walking their kids to school. I loved every minute of it. Eventually the early morning cafes started to open so I sat and had a cappucino and watched Venice wake up. It was great. I left that afternoon, but I wish I had liked my hostel enough to spend more time there.
