Lightening Ridge Church
A tin shed church in Lightening Ridge built for an art house movie. Nathan (my husband) and I have decided to go caravaning part way around Australia. We so far have left Bundaberg and then stayed a couple of nights at Dickie beach Sunshine Coast. We then went west through Kilcoy staying the night in Westmar. We then went on to St George and then south to Dirranbandi and then to Lightening Ridge where we stayed the night in a free camping spot 5 klm's south of the town.
What an intersting place Lightening Ridge is, it is an opal mining place that doesn't look like its changed in many years. The miners have their own little claims, which comprises of a little humpy for him/her to live in and a patch of rock (there is no grass anywhere.) The miners then dig down under ground, so you need to be careful where you walk, there is holes everywhere. It actually felt like I was stepping back in time to the gold rush days in Ballarat or similar lol.
The next morning we traveled on through Walgett, (remember thats where Betty from the 80's tv show 'Hey Dad' came from.) This town has around 2 thousand people in it, but was very
Walgett Main Street
One of the business's on the main street of Walgett, all of them had bars or cages on the doors and windows. very quiet as it was a public holiday and we saw hardly anyone around. The main street has bars and cages on all doors and windows, we think crime must be pretty bad around this area, we only stopped for fuel then carried on. We then traveled west through Brewarrina and on to Bourke. Bourke was quite nice, by the river it sort of had a Dubbo croosed with Echuca feel to it. We had lunch then carried on south to Cobar, this town was quite nice and green and well looked after. We camped the night in a free camping spot 65klms west of Cobar. We met a couple from Port Augusta on their way home, all stood around a fire for awhile chatting until the rain chased us inside.
Today we have traveled through Wilcannia a deserted old town with beautiful old buildings that have been left to ruin, it was quite sad to see. We stopped for fuel there at a backyard BP that had unleaded 10 cents a litre cheaper than the other station up the road. We still had to pay 140.3 cents a litre but we thought that was pretty good considering how
Bourke
The trees were full of Major Mitchell Cockatoos along the Darling River in Bourke. out back we are. It was a very slow trip through to Broken Hill as we were heading straight into a 30 knot head wind. Our poor 4WD was struggling at times. We now are in Broken Hill and there is alot to see so are going to stay for a couple of nights. That has caught us up to the present.
Its currently 4.30pm in Central Australia time zone and quite cold, its 15 deg but there is a really cool wind. Tomorrow we are going to see a ghost town called Silverton, it used to be a silver mining town but when the mines closed everyone moved away, the town still stands.
