It has been a long time since we left the Saufley's and last updated the blog. The day we reluctantly left the Saufleys, the trail led us to a water cache with a cooler full of soda, beer and water. The cache was set up by the Anderson family and came fully equipped with lawn chairs, shade, and delicious refreshments. There was also a note from the Anderson's encouraging hikers to stop by their house, and informing us they make taco salad and pancakes for all hikers who stay with them. This news resulted in a slight altercation of our plans: 23 miles after leaving the Saufleys, we were now going to stay with the Anderson's. After enjoying a beer and a couple sodas, we hauled ass for taco salads. Soon after arriving at the Andersons (aka casa de luna) we realized they were a couple who liked to party. The drinking was well under way when we arrived at 7pm. In fact, the town drunk, who the Anderson's were quite upset with was passed out in the bathroom. We were now certain that stopping by was the right decision. The next morning Joe was up making pancakes as promised. After a nice leisurly morning, we went and played 9 holes of disc golf with Joe. We hadn't planned on staying two nights, but it took very little persuation before we gave in to another night at the casa de luna. The next day we decided we had to get going, and after we were treated to a nice breakfast we managed to. A couple days after we left, we came up on a strange water source known as Hikertown. Our intention was to get water, sit out the heat of the day, and be on our way in a couple hours. Richard Skaggs, a former movie director/ politician/police cornell was the owner of the property. He came out and intoduced himself and offered to show us around the property. Before we knew it we had gotten scammed into helping a couple guys who were sheetrocking his garage ceiling. Fortunately, beer was provided and he promised to take us out to eat and drive us around in his rolls royce. After a 16 pack, we decided we had done enough work for a day, and had long given up the idea of hiking further that day. Mr. Skaggs did take us for a drive in his rolls, but he convenintly forgot his money at dinner so we had to pick up the tab. Frustrated by how we had gotten used, we were happy to be on our way the next morning. We hiked along the hot and dry L.A. Aquaduct for most of the next day. After a couple days of normallcy we arrived at the town of Tehachapi, our last resupply point before our break in Lake Isabella. That day was the one month marker since we started the trail and we celebrated by treating ourselves to a nice mediterraneen lunch. We managed to hitch a ride back out to the trail that afternoon. We entered the biggest windfield in the country that night and faced 7 miles of trecherous winds. The following day we faced similar conditions for the first 10 miles. Two days of good hiking brought us to Walkers Pass, the point where we got off to go to Lake Isabella and visit Leroy Boone. With hardly any effort we managed to hitch the 35 miles to lake isabella. It felt great to get cleaned up and have finally arrived at leroys which is approx. a quarter of the way into the trail. Adam arrived late that night for a two day visit. It was good to see him and leroy and tell them about some of our adventures. We spent the first few days of our break sitting in leroys backyard admiring his fruit trees and occassionly taking turns splitting wood for him. A few days ago, Minoo flew into Bakersfield to provide some motherly love. We are now pleanty rested and excited to get moving again. Tomorrow we will begin climbing into the high sierras and we both anticipate it will feel like a brand new trail. This section becomes rather remote but we will try to update the blog when possible.
