Los Volcanoes
The small hotel we stayed in our first night in Costa Rica. 6:00 a.m. flight ... not a happy time
A flight that leaves at 6:00 in the morning is not a happy flight. It is a miserable time to fly out of any airport. In the "good old days" we could have shown up fifteen minutes before the flight, rushed to the gate and boarded the plane. Now in our modern age we had to be at the airport at 4:00 a.m., and this meant we had to be up no later than 2:45 a.m. Ah, isn't progress wonderful?
There is nothing open at that time of morning so we packed a sandwich, dried fruit and nuts for our breakfast. I had called the airline several days ago to check if there was any food service on either flight to Costa Rica and was told that a Continental breakfast would be served in first class, but nothing in tourist. I was switched to the international office when I asked about the flight from Miama to San Hose, Costa Rica. The reply was;
"There will be food served in first class. But if you are flying tourist you are on a diet."
Why was I not surprised?

Joyce and Matt said they would meet us at the airport in San Jose. They were flying on two Central American airlines and both were fed meals on both their flights ... maybe I choose the wrong airline.
Our flights went well once we were in the air. The flight from Miami was an hour late taking off as one of the radios was on the fritz and had to be repaired. The pilot did make up thirty minutes of the delay. Thirty minutes late is better than an hour.
We had no problems clearing customs. The custom's agent looked at my (Bill) passport and asked, "Was you birthday really yesterday?"
"Yes," I said.
"Well, happy birthday," she said with a smile.
Joyce as waiting for us just outside customs and Matt was outside the terminal . The temperature was in the low 80's, a beautiful temperature. San Hose is only 8.5 degrees north of the equator. The sun was very strong and even with a comfortable air tempeature it felt as if you would melt into the sidewalk when standing in full sunshine. Poor Matt had been standing outside in

Los Volcanoes Joyce had been here a number of times and knew the ropes of getting around. With her help we hired a taxi and off we went to a small hotel, the Los Volcanoes. Joyce loves this small hotel and stays there overnight before going on to the retreat center for a week of yogi and relaxation.
The hotel Los Volcanoes is only five to ten minutes from the airport and is in the town of Alajuela, as is the airport. Though only five minutes away I did not hear any noise from the airport while we were there.
Breakfast Breakfast is served outdoors. Why not? It is always a comfortable temperature. As we ate I struck up a conversation with a couple sitting at a table beside us. There were from San Antonio, Texas and had bought a small hourse in San Antonio, Costa Rica. San Antonio, Costa Rica is in the mountains, abour a four hour drive from San Jose.
The Texan said, "Parts of the road are

Very friendly and helpful young woman. very dangerous. It is narrow with long almost vertical drops and no guard rails. There is one swinging bridge. One day I was talking to a government offical and I asked him, 'How often do you inspect the bridge?"
"Inspect the bridge?" he replied with a puzzled look on his face. "Inspect the brdige? Why would we inspect the bridge? If the bridge breaks, we know it doesn't work."
There is logic in his reply, but ..........................................
